The collapse of Australia’s border control policy could turn out to be a day of great consequence in Australian political and cultural history.
It could be a decisive loss of Australian sovereignty and a big step down the road to a future of European dysfunction.
It marks a serious erosion of national democratic accountability and institutional coherence, and a victory for the forces of international political correctness and the new class of trans-government bureaucrats and lawyer activists who seek to impose an orthodoxy on key issues that places them beyond the reach of democratic governments.

Local Islamists draw on British success in bid for sharia law

The push to recognise sharia law in Australia has entered an ambitious new phase that draws on the tactics that have handed success to Islamists in Britain.
The latest move, under the guise of helping Muslim women, would give sharia law priority over Australian divorce law.
If enacted, this plan would prevent Muslims from obtaining a civil divorce unless they first divorce under Islamic law.
The plan, published by the Alternative Law Journal, would require Muslims to appear first before a proposed Islamic divorce council made up of imams and lawyers who are familiar with sharia and Australian law.

An Australian Muslim was acquitted of attempting to kill or grievously injure a police officer, based in part on the judge’s decision that a vague and unsubstantiated “anti-Muslim feeling in the community” had helped make the perpetrator skittish enough to open fire out of fear. The verdict in the non-jury trial came in June, but a suppression order kept it hidden until last month.
On November 8, 2005, four policemen were dispatched to arrest a man identified in publicly available records only as BUSB. Upon being approached in a Sydney suburb, BUSB spun around, pulled out a gun, and fired, hitting a sergeant in the hand. Another officer then shot and wounded BUSB, who was taken into custody.
