Bishop Michael Nazir Ali’s address to The Iona Institute

The Church of England Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali gave a talk to the Iona Institute on May 9th, 2012 on the positive contribution of Christianity to law and culture and how it is now under threat from the “triple jeopardy” of aggressive secularism, multiculturalism and radical Islamism.

Bishop Nazir-Ali is originally from Pakistan and was the first non-white Diocesan Bishop in the Church of England. He was appointed in 1994. Prior to that he was Bishop of Raiwind in Pakistan. He holds both British and Pakistani citizenship and from 1999 was a member of the House of Lords where he was active in a number of areas of national and international concern. He has both a Christian and a Muslim family background.

Bishop Nazir-Ali has been a visiting lecturer in a number of universities and colleges in the UK, Canada, the USA and Australia. He has travelled widely in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America. He is the author of ten books and of numerous articles on Mission, Ecumenism, the Anglican Communion, and relations with people of other faiths.

A briefing by Robert Spencer April 24, 2012

Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch, has released a new book titled, Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry into Islam’s Obscure Origins. On April 24th, Mr. Spencer spoke on his book at a joint meeting of the Middle East Forum and Gatestone Institute in New York City.

Did the Prophet Muhammad really exist, or was he a sacred myth fashioned by the Koran decades after his purported death? Robert Spencer has addressed this thorny question with a dual intent:

Did Muhammad Exist? Robert Spencer & David Wood vs. Anjem Choudary & Omar Bakri

Did Muhammad exist? Robert Spencer’s new book claims that he didn’t. Can Muslims defend the existence of their prophet? In this debate, Spencer teams up with David Wood against Anjem Choudary and Sheikh Omar Bakri to see whether Muslims can offer historical evidence for one of their most fundamental beliefs.

Inventing Muhammad?

By Robert Spencer – April 23, 2012

Why would it matter if Muhammad never existed?  Certainly the accepted story of Islam’s origins is taken for granted as historically accurate; while many don’t accept Muhammad’s claim to have been a prophet, few doubt that there was a man named Muhammad who in the early seventh century began to claim that he was receiving messages from Allah through the angel Gabriel.  Many who hear about my new book Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry Into Islam’s Obscure Origins ask why it would matter whether or not Muhammad existed — after all, a billion Muslims believe he did, and they are not going to stop doing so because of some historical investigations.  Yet the numerous indications that the standard account of Muhammad’s life is more legend than fact actually have considerable implications for the contemporary political scene.

These are just a few of the weaknesses in the traditional account of Muhammad’s life and the early days of Islam:

  • No record of Muhammad’s reported death in 632 appears until more than a century after that date.
  • The early accounts written by the people the Arabs conquered never mention Islam, Muhammad, or the Qur’an.  They call the conquerors “Ishmaelites,” “Saracens,” “Muhajirun,” and “Hagarians,” but never “Muslims.”
  • The Arab conquerors, in their coins and inscriptions, don’t mention Islam or the Qur’an for the first six decades of their conquests.  Mentions of “Muhammad” are non-specific and on at least two occasions are accompanied by a cross.  The word can be used not only as a proper name, but also as an honorific.
  • The Qur’an, even by the canonical Muslim account, was not distributed in its present form until the 650s.  Casting into serious doubt that standard account is the fact that neither the Arabians nor the Christians and Jews in the region mention its existence until the early eighth century.
  • We don’t begin to hear about Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, and about Islam itself until the 690s, during the reign of the caliph Abd al-Malik.  Coins and inscriptions reflecting Islamic beliefs begin to appear at this time also.
  • In the middle of the eighth century, the Abbasid dynasty supplanted the Umayyad line of Abd al-Malik.  In the Abbasid period, biographical material about Muhammad began to proliferate.  The first complete biography of the prophet of Islam finally appeared during this era-at least 125 years after the traditional date of his death.

Muhammad: The Man Who Wasn’t There

By Robert Spencer – April 23, 2012

When I mention the title of my new book Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry Into Islam’s Obscure Origins, many are startled, as they had no idea that there was any question that such a larger-than-life character might be legendary rather than historical. But in reality, no one who interacted with those who conquered the Middle East in the middle of the seventh century ever seems to have gotten the impression that a prophet named Muhammad, whose followers burst from Arabia bearing a new holy book and a new creed, was behind the conquests.

This may seem to be an odd claim. After all, there are the well-known accounts of the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem. Those depict the caliph Umar meeting Sophronius and treating him respectfully, even magnanimously declining to pray in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre so that his followers will not be able to seize the church and convert it into a mosque. Umar and Sophronius conclude a pact that forbids Christians from building new churches, carrying arms, or riding on horses, and that requires them to pay a poll tax, jizya, to the Muslims; but Christians are generally allowed to practice their religion and live in relative peace. This is the foundation of the Islamic legal superstructure of dhimmitude, which denies equality of rights to non-Muslims in the Islamic state and is oppressive in numerous ways by modern standards, but which in the seventh century was comparatively tolerant.

An Interview with Robert Spencer

Author of 12 books, including the recently released Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry Into Islam’s Obscure Origins.

April 26, 2012 – by Barry Rubin

Robert Spencer is the director of Jihad Watch, a program of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, and the author of twelve books, including two New York Times bestsellers, The Truth About Muhammad and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) (both Regnery). His latest book is Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry Into Islam’s Obscure Origins (ISI). He is interviewed by Barry Rubin, PJ Media’s Middle East editor.

Rubin: What is the basic aim of the Jihad Watch site and of your books?

Spencer: The aim of all my work is to alert the public in the United States and around the world about the nature and magnitude of the jihad threat, with particular attention to the aspect of the threat that has been most obfuscated and obscured: its motives, goals, and root causes, as explained by the jihadis themselves. At Jihad Watch I post on a daily basis news stories showing jihad activity, both violent and stealthy, in the U.S. and worldwide. In my books I explore aspects of the issue in detail, most notably the chief motivating factors named by jihadis themselves: the Qur’an and the example of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.

Robert Spencer Asks: Did Muhammad Exist?

by Bruce Thornton on Apr 23rd, 2012

One of the jihadists’ most potent psychological weapons is the double standard Muslims have imposed on the West. Temples and churches are destroyed and vandalized, Christians murdered and driven from the lands of Christianity’s birth, anti-Semitic lunacy propagated by high-ranking Muslim clerics, and Christian territory like northern Cyprus ethnically cleansed and occupied by Muslims. Yet the West ignores these depredations all the while it agonizes over trivial “insults” to Islam and Mohammed, and decries the thought-crime of “Islamophobia” whenever even factual statements are made about Islamic history and theology. This groveling behavior confirms the traditional Islamic chauvinism that sees Muslims as the “best of nations” destined by Allah to rule the world through violent jihad.

Even in the rarefied world of academic scholarship, this fear of offense has protected Islam from the sort of critical scrutiny every other world religion has undergone for centuries. Some modern scholars who do exercise their intellectual freedom and investigate these issues, like Christoph Luxenberg or Ibn Warraq, must work incognito to avoid the wrath of the adherents of the “Religion of Peace.” Now Robert Spencer, the fearless director of Jihad Watch and author of several books telling the truths about Islam obscured by a frightened academy and media, in his new book Did Muhammad Exist? challenges this conspiracy of fear and silence by surveying the scholarship and historical evidence for the life and deeds of Islam’s founder.

Book Review: Did Muhammad Exist?, by Robert Spencer

April 23, 2012 – by Zombie

Scholars have for centuries been pursuing clues to “the historical Jesus” — evidence that the religious figure now known as Jesus Christ actually once existed as a real person. There have been hundreds, if not thousands, of popular books, documentaries, television programs, magazine articles, research papers, films and more on the search for the “real” Jesus. While this investigation into the ultimate origins of Christianity may have once long ago been controversial, it is by now quite commonplace and accepted as a standard part of religious studies, even when the researchers conclude (as they often do) that the evidence for the historicity of Jesus is skimpy at best.

But no similar investigations have ever been conducted on the historicity of Muhammad (a.k.a. Mohammed, depending on the Arabic transliteration). Why not?

Most people assume that no one bothers to investigate whether or not Muhammad was a real person for the same reason that no one bothers to investigate the reality of other religious founders such as Joseph Smith or Martin Luther or Anton LaVey — because the evidence for their existence is overwhelming, well-documented and unquestioned. Regardless of whether or not Muhammad’s teachings were moral or useful, everyone, even the most hardened infidels, of course accepts that he must have existed. Right?

Bernard Lewis Looks Back

By Evan R. Goldstein – April 22, 2012

Bernard Lewis left Princeton University in 1986, forced out at the then-mandatory retirement age of 70. At his farewell party, Charles Issawi, who was also retiring from the department of Near Eastern studies, delivered some remarks. “There are five ages of professors,” he said, “tireless, tiring, tiresome, tired, and retired; but for people like Bernard and me, retirement means a new set of tires and full speed ahead.”

Issawi was right: Lewis isn’t the retiring type. He has spent the years since then producing 16 books and countless articles, carried on his decades-long spat with Edward Said over the direction of scholarship on the Middle East, helped found a learned society to challenge “intellectual conformism” in the Middle East Studies Association, coined the idea of a “clash of civilizations,” became an informal adviser to the George W. Bush administration, and according to some observers, provided the intellectual firepower for the war in Iraq. Oh, and not least: At the age of 80, Lewis fell in love again.

Winter 2012

In this exclusive interview with TPQ, Bernard Lewis attributes Turkey’s historical progress to the practice of self-critique and to the choice of women’s empowerment. These are also the qualities, if maintained and developed, that will ensure a bright future for Turkey, he states. Indicating that in Turkey “at the moment, the movement seems to be backwards rather than forward,” Lewis points out that Turks currently face a choice. About Turkey’s role in the Middle East, Lewis reflects skepticism but also hope, relaying the message that Turkey can indeed play a leading role in the Middle East but whether this will strengthen Turkey in the global arena or not depends on how Turkey uses this influence, to what end, and in what direction. Decisions made today, in areas such as to enable frank and critical discussion, to innovate, and to provide women with the full range of freedom will determine how the future of Turkey and of the region at large is shaped.

Featuring controversial panelists Robert Spencer, director of the blog “Jihad Watch,” Pamela Geller, former-Muslim Nonie Darwish and Sudanese refugee Simon Deng, the conference addressed issues such as honor killing and Jihad in the Arab-world, and specifically focused on Islam’s contribution to said issues.

Save the Misunderstanders of Islam!

By Robert Spencer – April 16, 2012

Why don’t the leading Muslim groups in the United States care about Muslims?

It’s a serious question. Its urgency became clear yet again last week, when three more warriors of Allah got their just desserts: Tarek Mehanna, a young Muslim in Massachusetts, got seventeen and a half years in prison on Thursday for conspiring with jihadis to murder American soldiers in Iraq. The same day, Agron Hasbajrami, a Muslim who lives in Brooklyn, pled guilty to trying to aid terrorists and attempting to go to Pakistan to join them. And Jubair Ahmad, a twenty-four-year-old Muslim from Woodbridge, Virginia, was sentenced Friday to twelve years in prison for aiding Lashkar-e-Taiba, a jihad terrorist group in Pakistan. But these cases point up yet again an even larger problem: the denial and deception of Muslim spokesmen and organizations in the U.S.

Nowadays when fresh arrests, trials, guilty pleas and convictions of jihad terror plotters come down the pike, Muslim leaders and Islamic advocacy groups like the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) don’t even bother to issue condemnations. They don’t have to. After over ten years of constant propaganda from the mainstream media, government and law enforcement about how Islam is religion of peace and how anyone who commits violence in its name is misunderstanding and misusing its basic tenets, most Americans take for granted, if they hear about the likes of Tarek Mehanna, Jubair Ahmad and Agron Hasbajrami at all, that they are not true Muslims.

Last week, Islamic Apartheid Week was announced at Temple University in Philadelphia. A singular brave student organization at Temple wanted to counter the blood libel and propaganda of Israeli Apartheid Week, which is so common and so awful on college campuses, with the reality of the Shariah and the oppression, subjugation and persecution of women and non-Muslims living under Islam.

No sooner was it announced than the Islamic smear machine went into high gear. Numerous articles appeared in the Philadelphia City Paper, Naked City and elsewhere, smearing and defaming the speakers (Robert Spencer, Nonie Darwish, Simon Deng and me), but most egregiously me. Hamas-CAIR sent out a string of email alerts in support of the Occupy Muslim student groups’ protests.

Denne film blev frigivet i april 2011. En usædvanlig flot gennemgang af konflikten Israel ~ Palæstina:

Hijacking the Holy Land

Aiming to expose the truth behind the Middle East peace crisis, this documentary examines Palestinian government, educational and religious bodies that many claim promote hatred against Israel even as they talk of peace to the media.

This translates in to blatant bad faith, as they have been negotiating with Israel while operating a total war against the democratic state. The declarations made to the press are yet another entirely fraudulent aspect of this campaign that aims at nothing short of destroying Israel as an opening round of the efforts to reestablish the global caliphate both as revenge for the loss of the Ottoman Empire and due to religious compulsion of Islam to spread their beliefs by force when they have enough military power to do so. The prescient stage is known as “hudna” or strategic cessation of violence to allow building up resources for the soonest possible offensive phase. In fact one of the last caliphs, Mehmed V Reshad, declared a Jihad against the British and French at the outset of WWI as they joined the Germans.

Although hundreds of hours of history are required to debunk the lies and myths that have covered the facts in Israel funded by trillions of dollars of oil-wealth, you have to start somewhere. Using a timeline, the best starting point is probably this film here, which seems timely in view of the Palestinian Authority’s effort to continue this moral equivalence that implies building settlements on public land at strategic points for security is to Israelis what suicide bombers are to Palestinian Islamic imperialists.

What does that mean? It means in rough terms that suicide bombers are not ideal, but after all, the Israelis are building on public land that the Palestinians simply assume is theirs even before establishing any of the de facto requirements of a state. It would be like a parent getting accused of stealing from a college fund of a child that has not yet been conceived.

If any of this confuses you or angers you, that is great, because it should. If you think my positions are wrong, bring on your fact-based arguments. I only ever delete extreme profanity or blatant ugly bigotry. I let most of the bigoted comments remain, only countered by my own replies (rather than deleting them). If you can change my mind, you’ll have achieved a victory for justice. Go for it.

Population decline is the elephant in the world’s living room. As a matter of arithmetic, we know that the social life of most developed countries will break down within two generations. Two out of three Italians and three of four Japanese will be elderly dependents by 2050. [1] If present fertility rates hold, the number of Germans will fall by 98% over the next two centuries. No pension and health care system can support such an inverted population pyramid. Nor is the problem limited to the industrial nations. Fertility is falling at even faster rates – indeed, at rates never before registered anywhere – in the Muslim world. The

world’s population will fall by as much as a fifth between the middle and the end of the 21st century, by far the worst decline in human history.

L’Institut d’Égypte: In Memoriam

By Daniel Pipes – December 27, 2011

Founded in 1798 by the scientists accompanying Napoleon on his invasion of Egypt and responsible for the monumental 20-volume Description de l’Égypte (1809–28), L’Institut d’Égypte was burned down on Dec. 17 by crowds rampaging in the vicinity of the National Assembly building.

Remarkably for a learned institution, its doors were open to the public to meander and imbibe, though few did. During my three-year residency in Cairo in the 1970s, it served as a place of refuge, when the city was too much with me, as well as a regular destination for my foreign visitors. I treasured this little-known gem for its library of 200,000 volumes focused on Egypt, its symbol as the capstone of Orientalist learning in Egypt, its evocation of a different and better era, and the quietude it offered in a city with few such oases.

Why “Invent” the Palestinians?

Robert R. Reilly – January 17, 2012

This month, in Amman, Jordan, Israeli and Palestinian peace negotiators met for their first time in 15 months to try to restart the “peace process.” Meanwhile, the Palestinian group that rules in Gaza, Hamas, has repeated its declaration: “The battle for the liberation of Jerusalem is closer than ever and, God willing, we will win.” Which is it to be, peace or war?

Perhaps this question should be considered against the background of the recent ruckus Newt Gingrich caused in December by saying, “Remember, there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. We have invented the Palestinian people, who are, in fact, Arabs and are historically part of the Arab people. . .” The entire political spectrum took umbrage.  A critique from the right came from Elliott Abrams, a former Bush deputy national security adviser, who said: “There was no Jordan or Syria or Iraq, either, so perhaps he would say they are all invented people as well, and also have no right to statehood. Whatever was true then, Palestinian nationalism has grown since 1948, and whether we like it or not, it exists.”

Interview med Spengler

Om Spenglers nye bog:

“How Civilizations Die (And Why Islam Is Dying Too)” by David P. Goldman

Review and Interview – Ruth King – October 26, 2011

Logo Family Security MattersDemographic predictions often affect national security policy. President Jimmy Carter’s smarter brother Billy put it succinctly. When questioned about his shady deals with Libya, he replied “The only thing I can say is there is a hell of a lot more Arabians than there is Jews.” American policy with respect to the Middle East has been stated a tad more elegantly but it is based on the same immoral and obtuse calculations.

With respect to Israel, misleading predictions of Arab population growth were used, mostly by soft-core supporters to suggest that Jews were doomed to become a minority west of the Jordan River and should concede that geography in order to secure demography. A study : “The million Person Gap: The Arab Population in the West Bank and Gaza-the American-Israel Demographic Research Group” was published by the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies in February 2006  with Ambassador (Ret.) Yoram Ettinger  as head of the Israeli team. All the meticulous research, including birth and death records and emigration numbers, revealed a net loss of Arab births and a surge in Jewish births in the West Bank.

Book Excerpt: How Civilizations Die (and Why Islam Is Dying Too)

October 27, 2011 – David P. Goldman

Population decline is the elephant in the world’s living room. As a matter of arithmetic, we know that the social life of most developed countries will break down within two generations. If present fertility rates hold, the number of Germans will fall by 98 percent over the next two centuries. No pension and health care system can support such an inverted population pyramid.

Islams Allah synes at stå i vejen:

Will the Arab Spring turn into winter?

By Robert R. Reilly – September 22, 2011

Catholic News Agency LogoWith the lunatic tyrant Moammar Gaddafi almost gone from Libya and the ground shaking under Bashir Assad’s feet in Syria, one could only wish that hopes for the Arab Spring were on as solid a foundation as many seem to think. One’s heart naturally goes out to those who have been trampled for generations by one-party states or megalomaniac supreme leaders. These people are getting their first taste of freedom, and it is exhilarating for them and for all in the West who wish them well.

For example, John O’Sullivan celebrates that “Egyptians, Tunisians, Syrians, and Libyans have now proved that they too value liberty and that they are prepared to make terrible sacrifices for themselves and their fellow-countrymen. That does not establish that liberal democracy can thrive in the Middle East, but it settles the question of whether Arab societies want it. They do.”

The Fall of Two Empires

By Daniel Greenfield -  September 6, 2011

We’ve given up

Daniel GreenfieldThe Cold War between the economic empire of the West and the socialist tyrannies of the East made it seem as if the future would belong to the coalition with the best industrial machine and largest military. In the 21st century though the industrial machine has been traded off to China, and ICBM’s and armies haven’t managed to settle the brewing low tech conflicts of both empires with the Muslim world.

The scene to the right is Moscow at Eid al-Fitr, as Muslims protest the lack of additional mosques with street prayers. But it could just as easily be London, Paris, New York or dozens of other cities. While the two empires were stacking up ICBM’s, the Muslim world was stacking up babies. The empires suffer from low birth rates, and are experiencing an invasion that they have no defense against.

Remembering Muslim Colonialism on September 11

Daniel Greenfield – September 7, 2011

Anyone who cared to dig through the graveyards of Sudan already knew that Muslims mattered more than Africans to us. The sky full of jets that we dispatched to bomb Yugoslavia on behalf of Muslim terrorists never clouded the skies of Khartoum. But they did show up to bomb Tripoli so that Islamist thugs could begin torturing and murdering Africans.

In the left’s pyramid of races, some matter more than others, and Arabs are higher than Africans. So much higher that Sudan is piled with corpses, but the mere thought of Islamist rebels losing in Libya was enough to send in the air forces of bankrupt Western countries already tied up in too many places.

The primacy of the Arab Muslim over the African Christian is a recent thing in the liberal landscape born in part of realpolitik and the red enthusiasm for revolutionary violence. It is a thing which almost no one discusses because it has gone unnoticed. The racial vocabulary of it is one that few are even able to read.

The Closing of the Muslim Mind: How Intellectual Suicide Caused the Modern Islamist Crisis

People are shocked and frightened by the behavior coming out of the Islamic world—not only because it is violent, but also because it is seemingly inexplicable. While there are many answers to the question of “what went wrong” in the Muslim world, no one has decisively answered why it went wrong. Until now. Foreign policy expert Robert R. Reilly uncovers the root of our contemporary crisis: a pivotal struggle waged within the Muslim world nearly a millennium ago. In a heated battle over the role of reason, the side of irrationality won. The deformed theology that resulted, Reilly reveals, produced the spiritual pathology of Islamism, and a deeply dysfunctional culture (ISI Books).

Robert R. Reilly is a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council and has written for the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Reader’s Digest, and National Review, among many other publications. A former director of the Voice of America, he has taught at the National Defense University and served in the White House and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mr. Reilly is a member of the board of the Middle East Media Research Institute.

Oxymoron: Islamisk videnskab

Islam’s Non-Existent Contribution to America

By Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh - July 4, 2011

The Alexandrian Library in Cairo was accidentally set on fire during Julius Caesar’s brief campaign in Egypt in 48 B.C. One of the scholars who worked at the Alexandrian Library was a woman named Hypatia, born in 370 A.D., the daughter of the mathematician Theon of Alexandria. She instructed students on Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, and other Greek philosophers. She was regarded as a pagan. One day, she was dragged from her chariot, stripped, and flayed alive with clam shells.

Alexandria was the center of learning during the third century A.D. and a center of Christian worship. It appears that in 391 A.D., a mob destroyed the pagan temple of the Egyptian god Serapis, the Serapeum, and with it part of the Alexandrian Library, which was housed in the building.

Scholars claim that part of the library survived. The final destruction was caused by Arab invaders in 646 A.D. They destroyed all books that did not conform to the teachings of Islam. It is said that the scrolls from the Alexandrian Library were burned for months in the public baths as fuel to heat the water. Centuries old wisdom went up in smoke to bathe Islam.
