Some people, including your critic Florian Freistetter on ScienceBlog, seem to think that physics is a democratic process and what matters is to count how many papers favour or disfavour each hypothesis. That of course is nonsense. All that really signifies is the evidence from observations and experiments, and how a theory stands up to attempts to falsify it. Remember Einstein’s comment on the pamphlet Hundert Autoren gegen Einstein (1931) – “If I were wrong, one would be enough”.

The Global Warming Hoax is Now Killing People

Alan Caruba – February 14, 2012

By Friday, February 10th, an estimated 500 Europeans had died from the freezing weather gripping the continent. This is the price they and British citizens are paying for embracing the global warming hoax, spending billions for wind power when they should have been building coal-fired and other sources of energy to heat their homes and businesses.

As the British daily, The Telegraph, reported on Friday, “Serbia has started implementing power cuts in a desperate bid to stave off the collapse of its national grid as the country suffers the effects of days of freezing temperatures.”

I and others have been warning for years that the Earth has been cooling since 1998 and that the planet is on the cusp of a new ice age because the average length of an interglacial period of warmth between such ages is now coming to an end after the passage of some 11,500 years.

Tragedy Unfolding in Europe – Is U.S. Media Trying to Ignore It?

Robert W. Felix – February 17, 2012

The cold snap in Europe, which began in late January, has killed hundreds and brought deep snow where it hasn’t been seen in decades,” says this article in the Seattle Times.

This should be front page news. Instead, the article doesn’t appear until page eight. And the title, “At least 3 killed in avalanche in Kosovo,” belies the seriousness of the situation. (The print version carries a different headline: “Cold snap, snow lock down Europe.”)

How about a headline that tells it like it is?

Big freeze tightens its grip on Europe

4th February 2012

The big freeze has tightened its grip on Europe. The death toll has risen as temperatures have dropped and snow has swept across the continent from the east.

In Ukraine, at least 101 people have lost their lives. Supermarkets are short of food as trucks struggle to make deliveries.

A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Serbia where the high winds and snow are set to continue. Emergency services are battling to reach remote areas with vital food supplies.

The compelling case against Ed Davey

By Melanie Phillips on 7th February 2012

True to my warning yesterday in the Daily Mail, the new Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey has dashed the naive hope that he would end the Coalition’s suicidal green fanaticism and return Britain to Planet Reality over man-made global warming.  As the Times (£) reported today, he used his first few hours in his new job to tell the 100+ Tory MPs who are in revolt over wind farms effectively to take a running jump. Insisting he was a ‘lifelong supporter’ of wind power, he argued that the case for it was ‘compelling’ and that Britain’s energy production must be ‘clean and green’.

Cameron has the chance to end the scourge of wind turbines

By Melanie Phillips on 6th February 2012

With remarkably prescient timing, more than 100 Tory MPs have written to the Prime Minister demanding that the £400 million-a-year subsidies paid to the onshore wind turbine industry should be ‘dramatically cut’.

The MPs warn that it is unwise to force consumers to pay such subsidies for a form of energy production that they claim is ‘inefficient and intermittent’.

They also worry that the Government’s new planning policy will diminish the chances of local people defeating unpopular onshore wind farm proposals through the planning system.

Dictatorship: The Wave of the Future?

by Theodore Dalrymple – November 2011

Logo New English Review Banner

No one ever deserved a grisly death more than the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, but this is only a proof – if such a proof were needed – that justice is far from the only human desideratum. Gaddafi was responsible for untold misery, its amount limited only by the relative insignificance and impotence of the country in which he seized power; but when I first saw the photograph of him taken, lying bloodied but conscious, by a French photographer (a photograph that is surely destined for such immortality as the world can confer), I felt for him what I did not think I could ever feel for him – compassion. The fact is that no one should die as he died, or be killed as he was killed.

Other dictators have met grisly ends, of course. Mussolini was strung up, Ceausescu shot and Saddam Hussein hanged, all unceremoniously and without dignity. It is possible, even, that Gaddafi’s death was not absolutely the worst suffered by a tyrant in the last hundred years. President Guillaume Sam was dragged out of the French Embassy in Port-au-Prince, in which he had taken refuge, by an enraged mob, impaled on railings, cut into pieces and his parts exhibited in the city. President Sam was no guardian angel of the rule of law: he had just had 169 political prisoners summarily executed, but this should not prevent us from accepting as a basic moral principle that impaling and cutting up people is wrong.

E.Coli in Organic Food Leads to 50 Dead in Germany

Theodore Dalrymple – November 7, 2011

Perhaps health-food and vitamin supplements should be labelled, “Warning: Over-Concern for Your Health May Be Damaging to Your Health.”

As everyone knows, Mother Nature not only knows best but means us no harm: and therefore, the less we mess around with her and her products, the better. Although many people may have remarked, more in sorrow than in anger, how small and shriveled organic vegetables often appear by comparison with those that have been treated with chemicals, it is obvious that they (the organic ones) must be better for us because they are nearer to what Mother Nature intended.

This item of faith took something of a knock recently with the outbreak of Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli food poisoning in Germany. It was no small matter: more than 4000 people suffered from it and more than 50 died.

The New Libya’s First Mistake

Muammar Qaddafi should not have been killed, and his surviving son should be captured.

By Christopher Hitchens | Oct. 21, 2011

Logo Slate

Surrendering to a feeling of deep impotence and slight absurdity, I borrowed an iPad on Thursday afternoon and used it to send my first-ever message by this means. It was addressed to one of those distinguished Frenchmen who have been at the fore in pressing the outside world to remove Muammar Qaddafi from the obscene toadlike posture in which, for more than four decades, he has squatted on the lives of the Libyan people. Please, I wrote, intercede with your friends on the National Transitional Council, plus any other revolutionary tribunal however constituted, in order to stop the killing of the Qaddafi family and to ensure smooth passage to the dock at the Hague for those who have already been indicted for crimes against humanity.

Simple enough? It is some time since the International Criminal Court in the Hague has announced itself ready and open for business in the matter of Libya. But now Muammar Qaddafi is dead, as reportedly is one of his sons, Mutassim, and not a word has been heard about the legality or propriety of the business. No Libyan spokesman even alluded to the court in their announcements of the dictator’s ugly demise. The president of the United States spoke as if the option of an arraignment had never even come up. In this, he was seconded by his secretary of state, who was fresh from a visit to Libya but confined herself to various breezy remarks, one of them to the effect that it would aid the transition if Qaddafi was to be killed. British Prime Minister David Cameron, who did find time to mention the international victims of Qaddafi’s years of terror, likewise omitted to mention the option of a trial.

Muslim Polygamists Exploiting British Welfare System

Tens of thousands of Muslim immigrants in Britain are practicing bigamy or polygamy in order to collect bigger social welfare payments from the British state, according to experts interviewed in a British newspaper exposé on the subject.

The September 24 report shows that the phenomenon of bigamy and polygamy — which is permitted by Islamic Sharia law — is far more widespread in Britain than previously believed, even though it is a crime there, punishable by up to seven years in prison.

The rapid growth in multiple marriages is being fuelled by multicultural policies that grant special rights to Muslim immigrants who demand that Sharia law be reflected in British law and the social welfare benefits system.

Our language is being hijacked by the Left to muzzle rational debate

One of the most sinister aspects of political correctness is the way in which its edicts purport to be in the interests of minority groups.

This is despite the fact that, very often, they are not promulgated at the behest of minorities at all, but by members of the majority who want to destroy their own culture and who use minorities to camouflage their true intentions.

The latest manifestation stars once again that all-time world champion of political correctness, the BBC. Apparently, it has decided that the terms AD and BC (Anno Domini, or the Year of Our Lord, and Before Christ) must be replaced by the terms Common Era and Before Common Era.

Alongside Greek debt and the Libyan intervention, European Union countries are bickering over another issue, one that could well determine the future of their would-be megastate: immigration and internal borders. A growing number, including Italy, France and Denmark, want to carve out exceptions to the agreements under which member states open their borders to one another.

The issue has been simmering for years, but unrest in the Middle East and North Africa and fears of a new wave of migrants have brought it to a boil. Of course, closing off Europe to newcomers violates the cosmopolitan vision on which the European Union was built, and doing so could kill the project altogether. But as the continent’s leaders are now learning, it’s also possible to kill Europe by opening its doors wider than its citizens will tolerate.

Nonie Darwish Small[...]The reason that Red Arab ideology can survive inside the brutal political environment of Islam was because it did not challenge Sharia Islamic law as much as Western free style democracy. Red Arabs and Islamists were brought closer together by their Western mutual enemy. That is the state of Egyptian politics today, where the Islamist and Socialists have often cooperated, however, this cooperation evaporates as soon as the Muslim Brotherhood is in control.

The self-exiled Egyptian Yusuf Al-Qaradawi arrived in Cairo after the revolution to speak at Tahrir square Friday and socialist activists were prevented from joining him on the stage after his prayers sermon. That is perhaps a message that socialists are no longer needed by the Brotherhood after the revolution. I do not predict that socialism in Egypt will disappear with a triumph of Islamists, but the dance between the two ideologies will continue to manifest itself.

In that dynamic, the possibility for Egypt’s supporters of a Western style democracy to appear as a force is very week. This group will immediately be branded as puppets of the West and traitors to Islamic aspirations. For such a group to gain power, tremendous change and growth in Egyptian thinking and education must take place.

Unfortunately, my guess is that the situation in Egypt will get worse before it gets better and Egyptians need to experience the horrors of life under Islamic Sharia for a Western style democracy to emerge. The Egyptian culture is still extremely anti-Semitic and anti-American after many decades of indoctrination and propaganda that Islam is the solution. For now the power in Egypt will be with Islamists who will adopt some socialist policies.

And with his colleague Friedrich Engels he defined a revolution as the midwife by whom the new society is born from the body of the old.

Surveying the seismic-looking events in Tunis and Cairo in January and February of this year, various observers immediately began by comparing them to discrepant precedents. Was this the fall of the Arab world’s Berlin Wall? Or was it, perhaps, more like the “people power” movements in Asia in the mid-1980s? The example of Latin America, with its overdue but rapid escape from military rule in the past decades, was also mentioned. Those with longer memories had fond recollections of the bloodless “red carnation” revolution in Portugal, in 1974: a beautiful fiesta of democracy which also helped to inaugurate Spain’s emancipation from four decades in the shadow of General Franco.

Vil palæstinenserne have en selvstændig stat eller vil de ikke? Middle East Forum har skrevet et resume af Efraim Karshs forelæsning, som kan høres som mp3 her hos Veritas Universalis:

Does the Arab World Truly Want a “Palestine”?

A briefing by Efraim Karsh – January 25, 2011

Logo Middle East Forum

Efraim Karsh is editor of the Middle East Quarterly and Professor of Middle East and Mediterranean Studies at King’s College London. He served as an intelligence officer in the Israel Defense Forces for seven years before obtaining graduate and doctoral degrees in international relations from Tel Aviv University. He is the author of fifteen books, including Arafat’s War, Islamic Imperialism, and most recently Palestine Betrayed. On January 25th, he addressed the Middle East Forum on what the leaked Palestine Papers reveal about Arab and Palestinian aspirations for a Palestinian state.

According to Mr. Karsh, the documents recently released from Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations shed some light on the position of the Palestinian leadership and neighboring Arab states toward the creation of a Palestinian state. By tracing the history of both parties, Mr. Karsh stated that neither party has ever been, nor is, truly interested in forming a Palestinian state.

The Palestinians’ New Enemy: US and Obama

by Khaled Abu Toameh – February 22, 2011

The Palestinian Authority, which over the past two decades has received millions of dollars in aid from the US, is now waging a fierce campaign against the US Administration and President Barack Obama.

The anti-US campaign began immediately after the US vetoed last week a Palestinian-initiated resolution condemning construction in Jewish settlements.

Since then, the Palestinian Authority leadership in the West Bank has been urging Palestinians to take to the streets to denounce the US and Obama. It has also called for a “day of rage” against the US, which is being accused of being “biased” in favor of Israel.

Obama Was Right to Veto The Security Council Resolution

by Alan M. Dershowitz – February 22, 2011

The Obama Administration was right to cast its vote against the Security Council Resolution condemning the continuation of “all” settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as “illegal” and a “major obstacle” to “peace on the basis of the two-state solution.”

Although I oppose the expansion of Israeli civilian settlements deep into the West Bank, I also strongly opposed the one-sided, overbroad, legally erroneous and factually inaccurate resolution.

Read as intended by its draftsmen, the vetoed resolution would include the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem and the Western Wall as “occupied Palestinian territory,” even though Jordan originally captured and desecrated these Jewish holy places illegally when it attacked the new Jewish state in 1948. Israel lawfully recaptured these areas in a defensive war started by Jordan in 1967. They are not occupied territory and Israel is entitled to build as much as it wants to there.

Durban III truer forude

U.N. Pours Salt in America’s Wounds

By Anne Bayefsky – November 24, 2010

Just when we were beginning to get into the holiday spirit, the United Nations decided that Durban III is coming to town.

Logo FoxNewsLate yesterday, the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee adopted a resolution which launches another global “anti-racism” hatefest. It is intended to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the debacle held in Durban, South Africa in 2001. But this time, the UN has outdone itself: the celebration of a notorious prescription for intolerance, closely linked to Islamic extremism, is now scheduled for New York City just days after the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Like the Ground Zero mosque architects, the UN has decided to pour salt in the wounds of still grieving Americans. The crowds at Durban I held high their signs reading: “For the liberation of Quds, machine-guns based upon faith and Islam must be used,” and “The martyr’s blood irrigates the tree of revolution in Palestine.” The obvious connection between hate and terror, or incitement to violence and violence itself, is either irrelevant to the UN or part of the plan.

Christopter Caldwell om kriminelle sigøjnere

Eller romaer, som de hedder nu. Hvad vil Europa stille op med romaerne, spørger Caldwell:

Shutting out the Roma

With its immigration policy marked by an unwillingness to assert national interest, France needed a pretext to crack down on gypsies

By Christopher Caldwell

Last week in Lille a Catholic priest announced that he was praying that French president Nicolas Sarkozy would have a heart attack. The priest, Arthur Hervet, who has since retracted his words, is passionate about fair treatment for immigrant gypsies (or Roma, known in France as Roms).

They are currently in the French president’s line of fire. In the Loire in mid-July, a group of French gypsies (known in France as ‘travelling people’) attacked a police station with axes.

Two weeks later, in Grenoble, Sarkozy launched an ‘offensive securitaire’. He would break up 600 illegal encampments and squats, many of them occupied by immigrants from Romania, and repatriate the inhabitants.

Pletskud fra Asger Aaamund

Kommentar: Ytringsfriheden er en ballon

Asger Aamund.
