Muslims cast the deciding voted that thrust Hollande into the Elysée Palace. He also pledged to change French electoral laws so that Muslim residents without French citizenship would be allowed to vote in municipal elections as of 2014, enabling the Socialist Party to tighten its grip on political power.

An analysis of the voting patterns that barrelled François Hollande to victory on May 6 as the first Socialist president of France since 1995 shows that this overthrow was due in large measure to Muslims, who voted for him in overwhelming numbers.

The French vote marks the first time that Muslims have determined the outcome of a presidential election in a major western European country; it is a preview of things to come.

As the politically active Muslim population in France continues to swell, and as most Muslims vote for Socialist and leftwing parties, conservative parties will find it increasingly difficult to win future elections in France.

According to a survey of 10,000 French voters conducted by the polling firm OpinionWay for the Paris-based newspaper Le Figaro, an extaordinary 93% of French Muslims voted for Hollande on May 6. By contrast, the poll shows that only 7% of French Muslims voted for the incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy.

This is a brilliant speech: Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a human rights activist especially for the rights of women under Islam. She is utterly fearless in her condemnation of repressive regimes and religions where the rights of dissidents, male or female are oppressed.

She was born in Somalia, the daughter of a political opponent of the ruling dictator. Raised as a Muslim, she attempted to be a devout believer but fled an arranged marriage to what initially was a sanctuary in Holland. She became a Dutch citizen and was elected to parliament from 2003 to 2006.

She left the Netherlands after the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh who was making a film about the treatment of women under Islam. Ayaan had scripted the film and she was targeted as being the next to die.

Ayaan now lives and works in Washington DC and her current work is researching the relationship between Islam and the West. She is very interesting and critical about the failure of Western liberals to defend free speech and the rights of women under Islam.

She speaks here at the 2012 Global Atheist Convention in Melbourne in a talk entitled “The Arab protests of 2011: A secular Spring or an Islamist Winter?”

The foundation’s mission is to protect women from violence justified in the name of culture and religion. By religion, first and foremost I mean militant Islam. The violence that these women encounter is the result of their desire to be free. The freedom they seek is to pursue education; freedom to work, and most importantly, freedom to own their own bodies. To be mistresses of their own bodies, they want to choose their own mate, to choose how many children they have. In some Muslim households, this is not possible.

Nine ‘pure evil’ men who abused girls as young as 13 were today jailed for a total of 77 years for their roles in a child sex grooming ring.

Following an 11-week trial, a jury found the nine men, from Rochdale and Oldham, guilty of several counts of sexual abuse over a two-year period.

They were convicted on the back of evidence from five girls, who were as young as 13 when the abuse happened between 2008 and 2010.

With the conviction of nine men for organised sexual crimes from rape to sex trafficking, the full horrific details of more than two decades of sexual violence against young, predominantly white girls living in children’s homes in the north of England have been revealed.

The gang lured an officially estimated 47 girls (the figure may well be higher) aged 12 to 16 with gifts, alcohol and drugs before passing them around to have sex ‘with several men a day, several times a week’ in flats, houses, cars, taxis and kebab shops.

After phone calls inviting them to come and have sex with a girl, men would turn up to do so by the taxi-load. One 13 year-old was forced to have sex with 20 men in one night.

It recently emerged that British police had known for more than a decade that Muslim rape gangs were targeting young girls, but they ignored the evidence of rapes because “they were petrified of being called racist.” Rather than acknowledge that there is a problem, Muslim groups have decided to play the victim card instead. They are working overtime trying to silence public discussion about Muslim sex crimes by branding critics as “far-right racists” and “Islamophobic.” Several of the men on trial in Liverpool apparently told their victims that it was all right for the girls to be passed around for sex with dozens of men “because it’s what we do in our country.”

Nine Muslim men belonging to a child-rape gang in northwestern England have received hefty prison sentences for trafficking and raping young British girls.

The three-month sexual grooming trial at a court in Liverpool, which ended on May 9, has drawn nationwide attention to the sexual abuse of children and women by Muslim immigrants, and British police are currently investigating at least 40 other cases of child rapes perpetrated by Muslims in northern England.

The Islamic supremacist/Leftist smear and hate machine was out in force, holding a rally of their own earlier in the day and then attempting to storm our event and get in despite the fact that they had not registered. We had advertised for weeks that no one would be admitted without registering first. With their usual mendacity they have tried to spin this as our not allowing Muslims into the conference, but if no Muslims really got in, that was solely because no Muslims registered — if indeed there were indeed no Muslims inside. In any case, while these disturbances were roiling outside the door, our crack security detail, made possible by your kind and generous donations in response to our appeal Saturday, ensured that only those who registered got in, and that thuggish Leftist and Islamic supremacist brownshirts were unable to harm the speakers or attendees.

We held our AFDI/SIOA Jessica Mokdad Human Rights conference last Sunday in Dearborn, the first honor-killing conference of its kind. Hundreds converged upon the Hyatt to join Robert Spencer and me and a full roster of luminaries to educate, elucidate and shine a light on the ugly and brutal atrocities under the Shariah. As expected, the goons, thugs and Muslim supremacists were also out in force. It seems that Islamic supremacists support murder for “honor,” for these subversive groups energetically opposed our conference dedicated to exposing the plight of women under Islamic law on the first anniversary of the honor murder of a Muslim girl in Michigan, Jessica Mokdad.

When we first called the conference, which we did to increase awareness of honor killings and gendercide under the Shariah, the only attention the media paid to it at all was to give a platform to the Mokdad family, which was whining that Jessica’s name was being used. Such grief – so touching the way so many Muslims go into “protect Islam” mode and not “protect our girls.”

In the event, Denmark pulled back from the brink. Following my piece here a few days ago about the witch-hunt against the President of the Danish Free Press society Lars Hedegaard, the Danish Supreme Court ruled last Friday that he was not guilty after all of hate speech and racism – the second time he has been acquitted of this charge in a roller-coaster of a case which has stained Denmark’s reputation for justice, free speech and common-sense.

So a victory, certainly — but still only two cheers for Denmark’s legal system.  First, as has been the case throughout this saga, the acquittal – like the previous acquittal and conviction – turned merely on the narrow question of whether the remarks by Hedegaard which were in contention had been made in a private forum. The Supreme Court decided that he had had ‘no intention of disseminating his remarks to a wider audience’, and that therefore no offence had been committed.

The Prosecutor Lies in Wait

Article 266b, under which I was charged, remains unchanged. Thus, we still have no right to refer to truth if we are indicted under this article.

I am satisfied that the Supreme Court has delivered a verdict in accordance with the evidence given in lower and superior court. The prosecution had this evidence before it decided to press charges so I cannot understand why it went ahead.

The prosecutor has burdened the courts and the taxpayers needlessly for more than two years.

This judgment is not necessarily a victory for free speech. Article 266b, under which I was charged, remains unchanged. It remains a disgrace to any civilised society and is an open invitation to frivolous trials. Thus, we still have no right to refer to truth if we are indicted under this article.

Free Speech Found Guilty by Europe

The ruling showed that while Judaism and Christianity can be disparaged with impunity, speaking the truth about Islam is subject to swift and hefty legal penalties. The Supreme Court stressed that the substance of the charges — public criticism of Islam – is still a crime punishable by imprisonment. Under Danish law, it is immaterial whether a statement is true or false. All that is needed for a conviction is for someone to feel offended.

Lars Hedegaard, the president of the Danish Free Press Society, has been acquitted by the Danish Supreme Court on charges of “hate speech” for critical comments he made about Islam.

The verdict, however represents only a partial victory for free speech in a Europe that is being stifled by politically correct restrictions on free speech, particularly on issues related to Islam.

Intrepid Danish journalist, historian and President of the Free Press Society Lars Hedegaard, has been acquitted unanimously by a panel of seven Supreme Court justices.  led by Chief Justice Børge Dahl. Hedegaard was accused of intentionally denigrating Muslims in breach of Article 266b of the Danish Penal Code, which states,

Whoever publicly or with the intent of public dissemination issues a pronouncement or other communication by which a group of persons are threatened, insulted or denigrated due to their race, skin color, national or ethnic origin, religion or sexual orientation is liable to a fine or incarceration for up to two years.

Danish Supreme Court Acquits Hedegaard

On April 20, 2012 in a 7-0 decision, the Danish Supreme Court acquitted Lars Hedegaard of violating Article 266(b), the infamous “hate speech” provision of the Danish penal code.

Hedegaard’s case has been winding its way through the courts for some time now.  Readers will recall that he was first acquitted and then retried and convicted—a decision he appealed to the country’s highest court.

There is sweet justice in Denmark. We received news that the Danish Supreme Court acquitted Lars Hedegaard, President of the Danish Free Press Society of Prosecutor charges of ‘racism’ and “hate speech under Article 266b of the penal code that were upheld in a conviction and fine by the Eastern Superior Court in May 2011.  The headline of the Supreme Court  press release was “Dismiss the case on insulting and degrading statements about Muslims “  This is a major victory for free speech in Denmark and the EU.  This legal victory in Denmark should also be welcome news to the Hon. Geert Wilders in The Netherlands and hopefully useful news for Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff in her legal proceedings in Austria. The opinion of the seven justices convened by the Danish Supreme Court was posted on the website of the Danish Supreme Court. Hedegaard indicated that he will have an English translation for us later today along with observations about the decision. As we can appreciate it he has been swamped with congratulatory phone calls and interviews by the Danish press. In our last post on  Hedegaard’s Supreme Court case heard last Friday, we noted:

We had the occasion today to speak with Lars Hedegaard, President of the Danish Free Press Society (DFPS) about the circumstances behind yesterday’s hearing before the Danish Supreme Court.  A mutual Canadian colleague and friend, Bjorn Larsen,  flew to Copenhagen to observe the proceedings. Larsen is a Board Member of both the Canadian and International Free Press Society. He sent us some photos of Hedegaard and his counsel, Karoly Németh and DFPS board member, Jette Dali.  Németh escaped from his native Hungary as a teenager during the 1956 Revolt and has become a brilliant advocate in his adopted country. Németh arrived at the Supreme Court on his own power. He rode a bicycle. Larsen said in an email that the entire proceeding lasted approximately three hours. The prosecutor spoke for almost two hours, Nemeth for 40 minutes and Hedegaard for approximately 10 minutes. [...]

If the alleged Sage of Omaha is as exercised about this as his public effusions would suggest, I’d be in favor of repealing the prohibition on Bills of Attainder, and the old boy could sleep easy at night. But instead every other American “millionaire” will be subject to the new rule – because, as President Obama said this week, it “will help us close our deficit.”

As far as the media were concerned, the murder of Jewish schoolchildren in Toulouse and a black teenager in Florida were the same story — literally: Angry white male opens fire on “the other,” his deeply ingrained racism inflamed by the tide of toxic right-wing hate infecting our public discourse. Alas, in Florida, the angry white male turned out to be a registered Democrat and half Hispanic — or, as the New York Times put it, a “white Hispanic,” a descriptor never applied by its editors to, say, Sonia Sotomayor or Gloria Estefan or indeed any other person living or dead. And in Toulouse the angry white male turned out to be yet another Muhammad.

Oh, well. Better luck next time, although the pickings seem likely to get thinner: Pitch the Western world a decade or two down the road, riven by an ever-more-fractious tribalism between blacks, Hispanics, and Muslims, and the one surviving nonagenarian neo-Nazi white supremacist will be at the retirement home. But it’ll still all be his fault.

In 2009, the Danish writer and historian Lars Hedegaard, who is the founder and president of the Danish Free Press Society, made remarks in his home about the treatment of women in Muslim communities.  His observations, while expressed in broad generalizations, were based in fact, although when they were made public and resulted in widespread criticism he apologized for the way he had expressed himself.  This was not good enough for the Danish courts.  He was charged with violating Denmark’s racism law, and went to trial in January 2011.  He was acquitted, but was tried again on the same charges three months later.  This time he was found guilty.  Last Friday Hedegaard initiated an appeal of his conviction before the Danish Supreme Court.

Not so many years ago, such a story would have been regarded as nothing less than sensational: a writer is put on trial in a Western country for making critical remarks about a certain religion’s ideology and practices.  The unsettling truth is that the more often the sensational happens, the less and less sensational it becomes.  In recent years, the Western world has grown used to seeing writers hauled before official tribunals – Mark Steyn in Canada, Oriana Fallaci in Italy, Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff in Austria – invariably for criticizing Islam.  It doesn’t help that the mainstream media, with very few exceptions, almost always report on these actions as if they were anything but sensational: they’re treated as ordinary, reasonable, and legitimate judicial proceedings.

When we last left Mullah Krekar, Norway’s top-seeded resident jihadist, author, and Dancing with the Stars contestant (OK, I made that last one up, but not too long ago it would’ve been entirely conceivable), he was reportedly packing up his old kit bag and preparing to move back to his native Iraq.  His intention, he announced, was to give courses in how to strap explosives to your kid – sorry, I mean, in Islamic theology.

Well, as it turns out, rather amazingly, the Norwegian judiciary has upset Krekar’s plans.

Here’s the story.  Back in June 2010, Krekar – who at the time was facing possible expulsion to Iraq, where he insisted he was in danger of execution –issued the following warning: “My death will cost Norwegian society.  If, for example, Erna Solberg tossing me out of the country leads to my death, she will suffer the same fate.”  Solberg is head of the Norwegian Conservative Party.

Earlier this month, under the headline “Words are not innocent,” the Swedish newspaper Dagbladet ran an opinion piece by its cultural editor, Kaj Schueler, which was, essentially, an attack on Sweden’s newly minted Free Press Society.  It was one of several such attacks directed at the organization in recent weeks by members of Sweden’s mainstream media, all of which made essentially the same arguments as Schueler – who, early in his article, summed up his position as follows: “According to the Free Press Society, we no longer have real freedom of speech in Sweden.  They are wrong – we have it.  But since words are not innocent, there are limits to free speech.”

A few days ago I did some reflecting here on the steady rise of sharia in Britain, as exemplified by the BBC’s frank admission of its unwillingness to mock Islam, the harassment of an air passenger for an innocuous remark about hijab, and the see-no-evil response of a BBC reporter to mass displays of pro-sharia aggression in Luton.

Alas, the evidence of Britain’s decline and fall in the face of Islam just keeps on coming.  This week’s case in point is that of Darren Conway, who on March 6 was sentenced to a year in prison for posting anti-Islamic materials in the window of his ground-floor apartment in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.  As the BBC puts it, he was “convicted of a religiously aggravated public order offence for putting anti-Islamic literature in his window.”

After last week’s killing of three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse, early reports suggested that the murderer was a white, right-wing racist who was targeting minorities.  Indeed, one could be excused for getting the impression, from those first accounts, that the authorities and the media wanted him to be a white, right-wing racist – a lone maniac like the guy who mowed down dozens of teenagers in Norway last July.  Yet the Toulouse terrorist turned out, like so many perpetrators of unspeakable European atrocities in recent years, to be an Islamic jihadist – a self-declared Mujahideen and member of al-Qaeda who said he was out to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and the military involvement of France in the Islamic world, and who, if a van had not blocked the path of his scooter, might have succeeded in executing as many young people as Anders Behring Breivik did on the island of Utøya.

Remembering Mike Wallace

Channel surfing the other night, I ran across All the President’s Men for what felt like the thousandth time.  I came in about twenty minutes before the end, and – not for the first time – I felt compelled to watch it to the end.  What a splendidly written, brilliantly directed, terrifically acted movie!  What a stirring story!  What a beautiful piece of filmmaking, from the cinematography to the lighting design!  And what a crock!

All the President’s Men converted a generation of innocent, impressionable, pre-Internet Americans – myself included – into unthinking fans of the mainstream news media.  Some people in the government might be out to screw us over, and certainly every last man and woman in corporate America was up to no good, but the knights in shining armor at the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the network news divisions were there to come to our rescue – to save our freedoms and preserve our Constitution, wielding the truth like a shining sword.

“If you hate Norway so much,” read the email in my inbox the other day, “why don’t you go back to America?  Why don’t you go back to the Midwest or the Southern states where you can live with your beloved Tea Party friends?”

The email was in Norwegian, and the sender had a Norwegian name.  This is far from the first such e-mail I have received in my thirteen years in Norway.  A few years back, in a piece for the New York Times about the Norwegian economy, I made what I thought was a harmless remark in passing about the matpakke, the wrapped-up homemade sandwich that many workers in Norway, including high-ranking executives, chow down at their desks at lunchtime because it’s just too expensive here (Oslo is the world’s priciest city) for most people to go out for even a modest lunch.  After that article, I got several hundred outraged text messages, e-mails, and phone calls asking me why I was living in Norway if I hated its beloved traditions so much and ordering me to go back to America.  I even got a couple of death threats.

Will There Always Be an England?

It’s always refreshing when mainstream-media bigwigs are actually honest about the prejudices that guide their institutions.  So one could only applaud when Mark Thompson, director-general of the BBC, admitted the other day something that is already obvious to anyone who watches or listens to the Beeb – namely, that the folks who run the shop are as quick to broadcast works that mock Christianity as they are to forbid the mockery of, shall we say, certain other faiths, and that the main reason is, quite simply, fear.

Thompson actually gave three reasons for the BBC’s all-religions-are-not-created-equal policy.  First, he said that the BBC treats Christianity differently from other faiths because, as “an established part of our cultural-built landscape,” it is “pretty broad shouldered” – whatever that means.  Second, certain other religions have a “very close identity with ethnic minorities” who may feel that an attack on their beliefs is “racism by other means” – whatever that means.  Third, and obviously most decisive in determining the Corporation’s policy, Christians and adherents of at least one of those “other” religions have, shall we say, rather divergent ways of reacting to insults to their religion.  “Without question,” Thompson said, “’I complain in the strongest possible terms’ is different from ‘I complain in the strongest possible terms and I am loading my AK47 as I write.’”

A newspaper in a small European country publishes a few cartoons of Muhammed, and millions of Muslims erupt in outrage – or in what we have become accustomed to seeing described as outrage.  An obscure pastor of a tiny church in Florida threatens to destroy a Koran, and millions of Muslims erupt in that selfsame outrage.  Some NATO soldiers inadvertently burn a few copies of the Koran, and millions of Muslims erupt, yet again, in outrage.

And the next thing you know, large numbers of people have been killed, Western embassies have been vandalized, mischief and mayhem of every imaginable kind has taken place.  And meanwhile, the air is thick with apologies.

Recently the Partij voor Moslim Nederland (Party for Muslim Netherlands), which already enjoys a significant presence in various municipal governments in that country, announced that it intended to run candidates for the Dutch Parliament.  An article in Forbes listed the party’s major principles, which included limits on “offensive” speech about religion; the criminalization of blasphemy and of the destruction of religious texts; immediate admission of Turkey to the EU; an end to support for Israel; and the free and unimpeded importation of Muslim brides from abroad.

Book Review: The New Quislings

The American author Bruce Bawer, who has lived in Norway for over a decade, in early 2012 published the ebook The New Quislings: How the International Left Used the Oslo Massacre to Silence Debate About Islam. It deals with the aftermath of the terror attacks in the Oslo region on July 22, 2011 where Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in cold blood, first with a bomb in central Oslo and then with a shooting spree at the island of Utøya outside of the city. Relative to its population size, Norway lost more of its citizens in these attacks than the USA did during the Islamic Jihadist attacks of September 11, 2001.

A Victory Over Bigotry at Friends

The Friends Seminary in New York, which made the God-awful mistake in judgment of twice inviting Gilad Atzmon to meet with its students, has now acknowledged that it was wrong to do so and has promised never again to allow that bigot to set foot on its premises. It has also promised to invite me and representatives of the Anti-Defamation League to address its students about the dangers of the sort of anti-Semitic hatred spewed by Atzmon.

This dispute was never about Atzmon himself. He is just one of a number of hate mongers that crawl out from beneath the rocks of the internet. His claims that Jews may have killed “Goyim” to use their blood, his doubts about the Holocaust, his incitement to burn down synagogues as “reasonable”, his claims that Jews try to control the world and are responsible for most of its evils—these are the screwball rants of pathological anti-Semites that are and should be ignored. The issue was always about the lack of judgment showed by the Friends Seminary, which legitimated this hate speech to its students by inviting Atzmon.

Friends Seminary Plays Bait and Switch on Anti-Semitism

The Friends Seminary of New York, which invited the notorious anti-Semite, Gilad Atzmon, to one of its classes, and assigned its students to read his hate-filled writings, has now backed out of an agreement to invite me to the school to talk to the students about the evils of anti-Semitism. The Headmaster of the Friends Seminary, a school which is supposed to be committed to honesty and integrity, has broken his solemn promise to me, and to members of its own community, to allow its students to hear both sides of an issue which really has only one side: namely, the illegitimacy of bringing hate mongers into high school classrooms.

After I exposed the original invitations to Gilad Atzmon—who justifies the burning down of synagogues as “reasonable” response to Jewish efforts to “control the world”—the Headmaster of the school agreed to several things. First, he would speak at an assembly to the students about the evils of anti-Semitism; second, he would assign my essay to the students who were assigned Atzmon’s essay; and third, he would invite me to address the students. He has now broken each of these promises.

One shouldn’t wonder much about why Norway, Sweden, and Demark are willing to submit, like “Britainistan,” without so much as an audible whimper, to their steady Islamization, to their becoming de facto departments of a growing international caliphate. All three countries are welfare states that welcomed Muslim immigrants by the planeload over the decades to perform the work which entitlement-obsessed and welfare benefits-seduced Scandinavians no longer wished to perform. “Islamophobes” they were not. And still aren’t, even though their skyrocketing crime rates are directly attributable to immigrant and second-generation Muslims.

All three countries are governed by leftist elites, by political parties that redistribute other people’s money and spread the wealth around a lot. The Left has made an alliance with Islam, which wants to spread its creed around across the board and impose its ideology on non-Muslims by guile or force. There are, however, two camps of the Left. There is the Left that hates the West as much as do the Muslims, and will do anything to destroy it, even if it means its own dhimmitude and demise under Sharia law and submission. One could not imagine another group in that part of the globe more dedicated to the destruction of their own country. “We will be multicultural and non-judgmental, even if it means our own deaths. It is the right thing to do. We will be virtuous, even if it means accepting penance for our culture being superior to Islamic culture.”

It is a statement of the obvious to say that since the Ancient Greeks writers have known that the powerful are more dramatic than the rest of us. You do not need me to tell you that their decisions can improve or destroy individuals or nations; that what leaders do with power shows their character in the clearest light, and teaches the rest of us hard truths about human nature. Someone needs to tell the controllers of television, however. Their disdain for politics in part explains the collapse of British TV drama from world leader to also-ran.

Media managers still commission excellent one-off drama-documentaries — Peter Morgan’s films about the Blair years, for instance. But drama series come from the classics, or the tired detective genre or feel-good scripts written by and for Middle England because editors lack the imaginative intelligence to see their society in the round.

The environment has long been the undisputed territory of the political left, which has seen the principal threats to the earth as issuing from international capitalism, consumerism and the over-exploitation of natural resources.

In his new book ‘Green Philosophy’, philosopher Roger Scruton argues that this way of thinking is fallacious, and poses a danger to the ecosystems on which we all depend.

Instead, he believes that conservatism is far better suited to tackle environmental problems than either liberalism or socialism, and argues that rather than entrusting the environment to NGOs and international committees, we must assume personal responsibility and foster local sovereignty.

People must be empowered to take charge of their environment, to care for it as a home, and to affirm themselves through the kind of local associations that have been the traditional goal of conservative politics.

The current environmental movement directs its energies at the bigger picture but fails to see that environmental problems are generated and resolved by ordinary people – and that there is an alternative path that we can take which could ensure the future safety of our planet and our species.

Environmental degradation has one cause above all others: the propensity of human beings to take the benefit and leave the costs to someone else, preferably someone far away in space or time, whose protests can be safely ignored. The solution is to give space to the rival tendency in human nature, which is to take charge of costs, when the costs affect one’s home. So my book Green Philosophy is an exploration of the motive I call “oikophilia”, the love of home. The propensity for settlement and stewardship is at the heart of conservative philosophy, I argue, and ought to be at the heart of Conservative politics, too.

Schubert is needed now more than ever

The composer’s musical legacy contains more consolation for our loneliness than any other human creation.

Franz Schubert excelled in every musical genre, writing string quartets that can be set beside the greatest of Haydn and Mozart, symphonies that stand comparison with Beethoven, and works for piano that paved the way for Schumann and Chopin. His String Quintet in C major is perhaps the most beautiful piece of chamber music ever composed, while his 600 songs represent a flow of unaffected melody without compare in the history of music. He died aged 31 in 1828, leaving nearly 1,000 compositions, nearly all of which are marked by his distinctive genius.

There’s no question but that a Greece should be “allowed” to default.

“The first lesson of economics is scarcity: there is never enough of anything to fully satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.”

Thomas Sowell’s aphorism is of special relevance to us now, when we discover that, without the matter having been discussed or put to the vote, the most important economic decisions are in the hands of politicians. Democratic politicians secure their following by making economic promises–basically to steal from the few in order to reward the many. And in order to protect themselves from the cost of this they set up supposedly independent economic bodies, like the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the European Central Bank, which they place in the hands of political appointees. In all the excitement over Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s adventures in a New York hotel the media seems to have forgotten to ask the most important question: how was it that a politician, and one of the French sofa-socialist persuasion, should be in charge of the IMF? What conceivable attribute could have qualified him for such a position? Granted that a gargantuan libido might sometimes be useful in politics, in what way could it possibly contribute to the process of maintaining equilibrium in the world economy, and compensating where possible for the rash promises of politicians?
