Rep. Allen West Speaks AIPAC, Iran in Exclusive 3/6/12 Interview with GestetnerUpdates.com

Congressman Allen West in Omaha, NE 3/16/2012

Congressman Allen West speaks at a fund raiser for Congressman Lee Terry in Omaha, NE on 3/16/2012. During his speech, he described a few of his fellow Republicans who are running for office, as he did in 2010, in less than flattering terms. Don’t we have enough problems like this from the other side of the aisle without adding to them? Congressman West, have you ever sat down and talked with these “chuckleheads”? I expected better.

The speech as a whole was very impressive, accurate and to the point!

The betrayal of Congressman West

By Armstrong Williams – March 18, 2012

Can someone please explain to me why the Republican Party in Florida allowed Rep. Allen B. West to be gerrymandered out of his congressional district?

Mr. West is the most prominent and best-spoken elected conservative in the United States. He’s a motorcycle-riding war hero, a passionate Christian and a patriot. He’s the first black Republican member of the House from Florida since Reconstruction, and he is as strong a vice-presidential candidate as anyone else. But now he might not even have his seat in Congress next year. Why do we want to take one of our best players out of the game?

Love and Hate in Norway

by Bruce Bawer on Mar 2nd, 2012

“If you hate Norway so much,” read the email in my inbox the other day, “why don’t you go back to America?  Why don’t you go back to the Midwest or the Southern states where you can live with your beloved Tea Party friends?”

The email was in Norwegian, and the sender had a Norwegian name.  This is far from the first such e-mail I have received in my thirteen years in Norway.  A few years back, in a piece for the New York Times about the Norwegian economy, I made what I thought was a harmless remark in passing about the matpakke, the wrapped-up homemade sandwich that many workers in Norway, including high-ranking executives, chow down at their desks at lunchtime because it’s just too expensive here (Oslo is the world’s priciest city) for most people to go out for even a modest lunch.  After that article, I got several hundred outraged text messages, e-mails, and phone calls asking me why I was living in Norway if I hated its beloved traditions so much and ordering me to go back to America.  I even got a couple of death threats.

Will There Always Be an England?

by Bruce Bawer on Mar 7th, 2012

It’s always refreshing when mainstream-media bigwigs are actually honest about the prejudices that guide their institutions.  So one could only applaud when Mark Thompson, director-general of the BBC, admitted the other day something that is already obvious to anyone who watches or listens to the Beeb – namely, that the folks who run the shop are as quick to broadcast works that mock Christianity as they are to forbid the mockery of, shall we say, certain other faiths, and that the main reason is, quite simply, fear.

Logo FrontPageMagazine

Thompson actually gave three reasons for the BBC’s all-religions-are-not-created-equal policy.  First, he said that the BBC treats Christianity differently from other faiths because, as “an established part of our cultural-built landscape,” it is “pretty broad shouldered” – whatever that means.  Second, certain other religions have a “very close identity with ethnic minorities” who may feel that an attack on their beliefs is “racism by other means” – whatever that means.  Third, and obviously most decisive in determining the Corporation’s policy, Christians and adherents of at least one of those “other” religions have, shall we say, rather divergent ways of reacting to insults to their religion.  “Without question,” Thompson said, “’I complain in the strongest possible terms’ is different from ‘I complain in the strongest possible terms and I am loading my AK47 as I write.’”

The Vicious Cycle of Western Apologies and Muslim Violence

by Bruce Bawer on Feb 28th, 2012

A newspaper in a small European country publishes a few cartoons of Muhammed, and millions of Muslims erupt in outrage – or in what we have become accustomed to seeing described as outrage.  An obscure pastor of a tiny church in Florida threatens to destroy a Koran, and millions of Muslims erupt in that selfsame outrage.  Some NATO soldiers inadvertently burn a few copies of the Koran, and millions of Muslims erupt, yet again, in outrage.

And the next thing you know, large numbers of people have been killed, Western embassies have been vandalized, mischief and mayhem of every imaginable kind has taken place.  And meanwhile, the air is thick with apologies.

by Bruce Bawer on Feb 21st, 2012

One of the many interesting aspects of living in Norway is that one is frequently exposed to pro-Cuban propaganda.  As I wrote in my book While Europe Slept, the Norwegian media routinely depict Cubans as “an unusually happy people who, in a world of bland, cookie-cutter materialism, have taken a different path, retaining their magnificent, vibrant uniqueness and staving off the influences of the vapid ‘McDonald’s culture’ that reigns only sixty miles from their shores.”

Book Review: The New Quislings

The American author Bruce Bawer, who has lived in Norway for over a decade, in early 2012 published the ebook The New Quislings: How the International Left Used the Oslo Massacre to Silence Debate About Islam. It deals with the aftermath of the terror attacks in the Oslo region on July 22, 2011 where Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in cold blood, first with a bomb in central Oslo and then with a shooting spree at the island of Utøya outside of the city. Relative to its population size, Norway lost more of its citizens in these attacks than the USA did during the Islamic Jihadist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Nuclear Realities

When it comes to nukes, who has them matters a lot more than how many there are.

By Victor Davis Hanson – February 21, 2012

Given the worrying over nuclear Iran, it is timely to review the rules of nuclear proliferation.

Victor Davis HansonNuclear Cred
Otherwise insignificant nations and failed states gain credibility by shorting their own people to divert billions of dollars to acquiring a bomb. Take away that fact from Pakistan, and the United States would probably have reduced aid to such a de facto belligerent long ago. Without the ongoing appearance of possessing nukes, North Korea would probably earn about as much foreign aid as Chad or Niger. What makes France a world player, in a way that the much larger and richer Germany is not, is not just the burdens of German guilt, but also the fact of a nuclear France. The bomb sometimes achieves what even GDP, population, strategic location, or natural resources cannot.

Please, A Little Honesty about Illegal Immigration

It’s time to take out the hysterical rhetoric.

By Victor Davis Hanson – February 16, 2012

President Barack Obama recently assured El Salvador that the United States would not deport the more than 200,000 Salvadorans residing illegally in the United States. As the election nears, and the president looks to court Hispanic voters, he has also created a new position of “public advocate” for illegal immigrants, whose duties would appear to be advocating that millions circumvent, rather than follow, current federal law.

The administration has also said it will focus its enforcement only on those who have committed crimes — with the implicit understanding that it is no longer a crime to illegally enter and reside in the United States. Obama has caricatured those supporting completion of a fence on the border as wanting to place alligators in the Rio Grande.

Europe in the Rearview Mirror

February 12, 2012 – by Victor Davis Hanson

The Dream and the Nightmare

The European Union was always a paradox. Its existence was predicated entirely on the notion of German guilt, translating into massive cash transfers east and south. Just as Versailles was supposed to have restrained Germany, then a divided, postwar Germany, then NATO integration and the common Soviet enemy, and then the EU — and now what next?

There was quite a EU veneer placed over the politically incorrect “German Problem.” Most of us listened in disbelief as we were lectured that veritable disarmament, subsidized windmills, reach outs to a Syria or Libya, easy anti-Americanism, and sermons about cradle-to-grave socialism were the way of the new Europe. And always came the grating condescension, that a self-appointed bureaucratic class in Brussels might lecture Neanderthals what was good for them, without worry over democratic checks and balances.

Why NATO Still Matters

by Victor Davis Hanson – February 14, 2012

Germany’s financial dominance may be worrisome, but is it a threat to European peace?

The first Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the sober and judicious British Lord Ismay, famously remarked that the purpose of the controversial new postwar alliance would be “to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.”

Over the next sixty-six years of NATO’s existence, most in the Atlantic Alliance assumed that the first commandment was obvious, the second one was taken for granted, and the third would soon be irrelevant. No longer.

And 30 years after leaving the White House, the peanut farmer turned president is still a man on mission. In Plains, Georgia, we found the 39th US president full of energy… and determined to make a difference

Carole Cadwalladr – 11 September 2011

Where does Jimmy Carter live? Well, close your eyes and imagine the kind of house an ex-president of the United States might live in. The sort of residence befitting the former leader of the most powerful nation on earth. Got it? Right, now scrub that clean from your mind and instead imagine the sort of house where a moderately successful junior accountant and his family might live.

It’s what in America is called a “ranch house”, or, as we’d say, “a bungalow”. There are no porticoes. No columns. No sweeping lawns. There’s just a small brick single-storey structure that Jimmy and his wife, Rosalynn, built on Woodland Drive back in 1961 when he was a peanut farmer and she was a peanut farmer’s wife, right in the heart of the town in which they grew up. Though Plains, Georgia is barely a town. A street, might be a more accurate description. A single road going nowhere much.

Edward Luttwak is a rare bird whose peripatetic life and work are the envy of academics and spies alike. A well-built man who looks like he is in his mid-50s (he turns 70 next year), Luttwak—who was born in 1942 to a wealthy Jewish family in Arad, Romania, and educated in Italy and England—speaks with a resonant European accent that conveys equal measures of authority, curiosity, egomania, bluster, impatience, and good humor. He is a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at Georgetown University, and he published his first book, Coup d’État: A Practical Handbook, at the age of 26. Over the past 40 years, he has made provocative and often deeply original contributions to multiple academic fields, including military strategy, Roman history, Byzantine history, and economics. He owns a large eco-friendly ranch in Bolivia and can recite poetry and talk politics in eight languages, a skill that he displayed during a recent four-hour conversation at his house, located on a quiet street in Chevy Chase, Md., by taking phone calls in Italian, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese, during which I wandered off to the porch, where I sat and talked with his lovely Israeli-born wife, Dalya Luttwak, a sculptor.

The Meaning of Pyongyang

by Theodore Dalrymple – September 2011

Logo New English Review Banner

There are some countries that, once visited, retain a disproportionate hold on your imagination. Among them, for me at least, are Haiti and Liberia, two small states that are known to the world at large principally for their political, and sometimes for their natural, catastrophes. They are marginal from the point of view of the world economy, I need hardly say, and yet their history has something about it that makes it seem significant beyond itself. No one, I think, can study the early history of either country without being moved by it; and just as the biography of a single person can also be a portrait of an age, so the history of an otherwise insignificant country can tell us something important about the human predicament as a whole, for example our tendency to turn liberation into a new form of servitude.

Why Is Amnesty International Attacking Canada?

by Adam Daifallah – August 17, 2011

It is a rare occurrence when a top government official comes out – on the record – to attack a human rights group. But that is what happened last week when Canada’s Immigration Minister ripped into Amnesty International after it criticized Canada’s plan to crack down on alleged war criminals hiding out in Canada.

Earlier this month, the secretaries general of Amnesty International’s Canadian branches, Alex Neve and Béatrice Vaugrante, wrote an open letter to Canadian government ministers Vic Toews and Jason Kenney to express outrage over Canada’s recent outing of 30 men residing in Canada – all of whom who are accused of war crimes.

Their names were published on a government website, asking for people to help find them. All were missing inside Canada’s borders (six have since been arrested) and are wanted for deportation.

Muslim Brotherhood: “Impose Islam… Step by Step”

by Raymond Ibrahim – July 25, 2011

Logo Middle East Forum Banner

Things are looking good for Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, the grandfather of all Islamist groups. Despite the organization’s hegemonic aspirations—which include “eliminating and destroying the Western civilization … so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions”—the Obama administration recently announced that it “welcomes dialogue” with the Brotherhood; so did the European Union. And under Egypt’s military regime, the Islamist organization just “became a legal political party for the first time since President Gamal Abdel Nasser banned it more than half-a-century ago.”

Why Nasser banned the Brotherhood — and tried to decimate it — is instructive.

Machiavellian from the start, Nasser collaborated closely with the Brotherhood; many Egyptians still insist he was originally a member. Soon after usurping Egypt’s leadership via the 1952 Revolution, the alliance soured, culminating with an assassination attempt on Nasser’s life by a Brotherhood member.

UN’s bad joke: North Korea runs talks about disarmament

By Anne Bayefsky | June 30, 2011

On Tuesday, the United Nations made a bad joke by appointing North Korea to chair of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament. North Korea assumes the conference chairmanship by being the next state in the alphabetical rotation of the 65 members, which include five nuclear weapons states and 60 other countries such as Iran and Syria.

North Korea’s representative, So Se Pyong, was enthusiastic about his new job. He announced that he was “very much committed to the conference” and that during his presidency he “welcomes any sort of constructive proposals that strengthened the work and credibility of the Conference on Disarmament.” He also said that “he would do everything in his capacity to move the Conference on Disarmament forward.”

Unmasking the ‘international community’

By Caroline B. Glick . July 1, 2011

While emptily mouthing slogans of tolerance, adherents to the rule of the “international community” embrace the agenda of the most violent, intolerant, totalitarian forces in the world.

For many years, the Left in Israel and throughout the world has upheld the so-called “international community” as the arbiter of all things. From Israel’s right to exist to climate change, from American world leadership to genetically modified crops, the Left has maintained that the “international community” is the only body qualified to judge the truth, lawfulness, goodness and justice of all things.

Most of those who uphold this view see the United Nations as the embodiment of the “international community.”

The premise has been this: we are supposed to believe that (a) privately Pakistani intelligence and their armed services offer us access to key borderland territory; (b) Pakistan suffers more from al Qaeda-like terrorism than do we; (c) they provide us valuable covert information; (d) they keep their nukes under wraps; (e) they do not openly seek to destroy the Afghan government; (f) they are more duplicitous and two-faced with their Islamist friends than they are with us, their benefactors; and (g) they don’t start a war with India and develop even closer relations with China. All that is supposed to be worth the $3 billion in aid a year, putting up with the obnoxious public anti-American protests, and enduring the moronic lectures from Pakistani diplomats.

Examining ‘The Origins of Political Order’

The recent decline of the American economy shows that even a democratic superpower can be brought to its knees. Those events also suggest we need a re-think of the relationship between markets and governments, especially around the issue of regulation.

That’s one of the sidebars of the latest book from Francis Fukuyama. The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution is very interested in current affairs – including economic disparities in the West and political revolt in the Middle East. But it is also an exploration, on the epic scale, of how we got to this point. How did various countries develop politically, in many cases moving from societies organized by tribes to states grounded in political institutions?
