by Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury- August 29, 2011

Logo Weekly Blitz

Taslima Nasrin, an award-wining writer and human rights activist, is known for her powerful writings on women oppression and unflinching criticism of religion, despite forced exile and multiple fatwa calling for her death. Not many have risked their life to tell the truth. In India, Bangladesh and abroad, Nasrin’s fiction, poetry and memoir have topped the best-seller’s list.

Taslima: US envoy condemns all parties

Pallavi Shahi – New Delhi | 4th Sep

The CPI(M) is “hypocritical and authoritarian” over controversial author Taslima Nasreen, the BJP is “opportunistic and exploitative” and the Congress is “neither secular nor courageous”, said the then US ambassador to India, David Mulford in a cable commenting on the three parties’ handling of the Nasreen crisis in 2007, when she was forced to flee Kolkata. In a 28 November 2007 cable released by WikiLeaks, the ambassador scathingly comments, “India’s main political parties could not care less about Nasreen or her writing beyond how their parties’ reactions to events play to voters”.

Opdatering 22. september 2011 – lille nyt interview:

If Mamata allows, would love to return to Kolkata: Taslima

Controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen feels “Peace is far away” and claims that she is a victim of religious, political and social ‘fatwas’.

“Unfortunately, settlement is not for me. Banning, censorship continues. Not only religious fatwas, I became an unfortunate victim of political and social fatwas. Life is not easy and peace is far away,” 49-year-old Nasreen, who has been living in Delhi since June, said.

UMP unveils ideas for secularism

The UMP party has produced a total of 26 propositions which cover areas such as funding and the relationship between religion, the state, the public and the workplace.

French Ruling Party Discusses Separation of Church and State

Nidra Poller – April 20, 2011

Logo Family Security MattersThe video of a Koran-burning by an obscure pastor in Gainesville, Florida went viral, spinning all the way to Mazar-i-Sharif (Afghanistan) where, on April 1st, an enraged mob stormed the UNAM (United Nations Assistance Mission) compound, killing 3 UN staff members and 4 Nepalese Gurkha guards, and wounding dozens. Two of the victims were reportedly beheaded. Sensitivity in France to criticism of Islam, Muslims, and/or immigrants does not reach murderous proportions, but controversy has been raging ever since the UMP announced it was holding a debate on laïcité (France’s official separation of church and state). The integrity of President Sarkozy’s government was questioned, the debate was branded a sop to the Front National, petitions circulated and dire predictions were vociferated. The Convention on “Laïcité pour mieux vivre ensemble” [laïcité for getting along together] was held on April 5th at the Pullman Hotel across the street from Gare Montparnasse… and French media lost interest in the whole affair.

Is it because the 26 concrete proposals presented during the 4-hour event belied the lurid accusations smeared ahead of the debate? The proposed measures are clearly not motivated by a fiendish anti-Muslim ideology; they are a concrete political response to authentic issues raised from the ground up. Though Christianity and Judaism were thrown in to keep Islam company when touchy issues tear at the social fabric, Islam was separated out for special consideration in the second half of the Convention.

Do We Have the Right to Burn the Koran?

Sam Harris – April 1, 2011

The New York Times reported today that at least ten UN aid workers have been murdered by an Afghan mob. This senseless savagery occurred in Mazar-i-Sharif, “one of the most peaceful places in Afghanistan,” in response to news that a Florida pastor, Terry Jones, finally made good on his threat to burn a copy of the Koran. Pastor Jones and the members of his tiny congregation in Gainesville appear to be religious crackpots of the first order, but anyone tempted to condemn them for provoking this violence has lost the plot. As I wrote previously in defense of the Dutch politician Geert Wilders (“Losing Our Spines to Save Our Necks”):

It’s Not Terry Jones’ “Fault”

Diana West – April 4, 2011

Logo Family Security MattersNot to be outstyled by the “avenging” Gray Lady, The Christian Science Monitor wins Dhimmi of the News-Day today for this headline:

Terry Jones: How free speech and Quran burning can lead to violence

Is it really necessary to explain that free speech is speech and not violence; that burning the Koran is burning a bunch of wood pulp, and not violence; that violence is violence and that the only thing that “led” to it, now as always, are barbaric imams who, following the laws of Islam, exhorted their rabid flock to kill “infidels”?

New Koran Campaign Follows Old Patterns

By Paul Marshall – April 4, 2011

The latest round of killings in Afghanistan, including of Nepalese, ostensibly in response to a burning of a Koran by preacher Wayne Sapp in Florida on March 27, is now following the script of earlier such events. There are three standard patterns.

The first is that the anger and killings are politically hyped. Not much was made of the event at the time — as I noted earlier, Iran followed up its burning of six hundred New Testaments with a ritual condemnation of the Koran burning as part of an American “hegemonic plot,” but otherwise not much happened.

Helle Merete Brix – 3. april 2011

Terry Jones, the radical pastor who oversaw the burning of a Koran in his Florida church last month after a mock court hearing, may put the Islamic prophet Mohammed on trial in his next ‘day of judgement’, he told The Sunday Telegraph.

Video: Regeringen holder os for nar?
