The Revered and Reviled Bernard Lewis

A Retrospective Of The Scholar Who Provided The Intellectual Ammunition For The Iraq War

Daphna Berman  – September/October 2011

Bernard Lewis has just moved to a small apartment in the manicured suburbs on Philadelphia’s Main Line. At 95, it was time for the man the Encyclopedia of Historians and Historical Writing calls the “most influential postwar historian of Islam and the Middle East” to leave Princeton—his home for more than 35 years—for a senior living facility known for attracting retired academics.

“I’m getting old, I’m no longer sure about dates,” he tells me in his polished British accent, though this moment of self-deprecation is hardly convincing: Our conversation reflects his uncanny ability to recollect dates, time lines and facts—both from his lifetime and several centuries before. As we talk, Lewis recalls the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 as easily as the Turkish elections of 1950. He also regales me with stories, though it is impossible to predict which millennium they will date to. One minute, it’s the Marx Brothers skits he shared with the Shah of Iran in the days before the revolution, the next, an eighth century Arabian joke about a sinful woman praying to Allah for mercy before she dies. And he speaks with eloquence, his ideas organized into complete paragraphs.

On GBTV Geert Wilders Sits down w/ Glenn Beck and Talks Europe, Islam, Terrorism, & America

On May 3rd Dutch Parliament member Geert Wilders sat down with Glenn Beck and talked about the state of Europe, America and the impact Radical Islam and Terrorism are having upon the world.

Marked for Death

Fanatics, terrorists, and appeasers have tried everything to silence Geert Wilders, Europe’s most controversial Member of Parliament—from putting him on trial to putting a price on his head. But Wilders refuses to be silenced—and one result is the book you have in your hands.

For years, from his native Netherlands, Wilders has sounded the alarm about the relentless spread of Islam in the West. And he has paid a steep personal price, enduring countless death threats and being forced into a permanent state of hiding.

Now, for the first time, Wilders offers a full account of his long battle against the zealots who have already slaughtered his countryman Theo van Gogh—whose killer also threatened to murder Wilders himself.

In Marked for Death, Wilders reveals: How—and why—liberal politicians, including Barack Obama, downplay the Islamic threat The systematic suppression of free speech through lawsuits, prosecutions, threats, and violence meted out against Islam’s critics The untold story: how Islamic groups are redefining human rights to suppress non-Muslims everywhere The true, bloody history of Islam’s spread throughout the world How the West can defend itself against an existential enemy determined to conquer the globe

Expelled from Britain, banned from Indonesia, denounced by the UN Secretary General, prosecuted in court for his beliefs, forced into government safe houses, and constantly threatened with death, Geert Wilders is unbowed and unapologetic. Marked for Death is a stark warning about a growing threat to our liberties written by a man who has lost his freedom—and would not see the rest of us suffer the same fate.

Video: Andrew Bostom om religiøst had i islam

Især om jødernes lidelser gennem historien – fra 24. januar 2012. Blandt spørgerne ser man Nonie Darwish:

Dr. Andrew Bostom – Understanding the Islam in Muslim Jew-Hatred

Mere følgetekst under videoen:

Dr. Andrew G. Bostom, the author of the highly acclaimed The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims, demonstrates that Antisemitism in the Muslim world—from the 7th century advent of Islam, through the contemporary era—is rooted in the foundational texts of Islam itself.

Lawrence Wright, in his Pulitzer Prize winning book The Looming Tower, claimed that “Until the end of World War II…Jews lived safely -although submissively-under Muslim rule for 1,200 years, enjoying full religious freedom; but in the 1930s, Nazi propaganda on Arabic-language short-wave radio, coupled with slanders by Christian missionaries in the region, infected the area with this ancient Western prejudice (antisemitism).” Matthias Kuntzel has stated that it was “(d)uring the Thirties and Forties (that) Islamist anti-modernism was poisoned by the Nazi antisemitic mind-set.”

These erroneous if widely prevalent conceptions of Islam’s doctrinal and historical treatment of Jews rest on two false pillars popularized by the poorly researched, if emphatically asserted claims of a major scholar of Islam … (I) “In Islamic society hostility to the Jew is non-theological. It is not related to any specific Islamic doctrine, nor to any specific circumstance in Islamic history. For Muslims it is not part of the birth-pangs of their religion, as it is for Christians.” (II) “…‘dhimmi’-tude subservience and persecution and ill treatment of Jews… is a myth.”) (…) This sham castle of glib affirmations must be swept away if the enduring phenomenon of Islamic Antisemitism is to be properly understood.

Those false conceptions are the heart of the problem. They are usually affirmed without substantive proofs being given. The actual data, provides a negative proof. It reminds me of a scene in Woody Allen’s film Sleeper. Allen portrays Miles Monroe, the owner of a health food store in Greenwich Village who is cryogenically frozen and he wakes up 20 years in the future. In one scene he is confronted by two doctors, one of whom is very authoritative and claims to be possessed “of what we know to be true.” He offers Miles a cigarette saying “Here, smoke this, and be sure you get the smoke deep down into your lungs. Its tobacco, one of the healthiest things for your body.”

There are incontrovertible and overwhelming hard data – pathological and epidemiological – which demonstrate a major causative role for smoking in both the predominant form of lung cancer (i.e., adenocarcinoma), and premature coronary heart disease. Dr. Bostom believes smoking is to these diseases as the Islam in Islamic Antisemitism is to this scourge of Jew-hatred, past and present. It is as destructive to our social and moral health to deny this reality, as it is to human public health disease prevention efforts to deny the causative link between cigarette smoking and adenocarcinoma of the lung, or premature coronary heart disease. That is what Dr. Bostom came to conclude from doing his own research for The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism.

Andrew G. Bostom, M.D., M.S. (Providence, RI), is the author of the highly acclaimed books The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims, and The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, the major teaching affiliate of Brown University Medical School.

Dr. Bostom has published numerous articles and commentaries on Islam in the The New York Post, The Daily News, Washington Times, National Review Online, Pajamas Media, American Thinker, FrontPage Magazine.com, Big Peace, and other print and online publications. More on Andrew Bostom’s work can be found at andrewbostom.org/blog including a preview of his recent book, The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History. His latest book, Sharia Versus Freedom—The Legacy of Islamic Totalitarianism, with a Foreword by Andrew C. McCarthy, will be published by next September (2012).

“I read a withering critique of Dr. El Fadl’s arguments by the indomitable Andrew Bostom, a true scholar and walking encyclopedia on Sharia Islam.”- George Aaron, American Thinker, Jan 7, 2012.

Dr. Bostom speaks on topics related to jihadism, Islam’s treatment of non-Muslim minorities in general, and Islamic Jew-hatred in particular, and the threat Sharia Law encroachment poses to Western societies.

First They Came for the Firemen

By Andrew Bostom – February 27, 2012

An utterly bone chilling example of self-destructive dhimmitude was described in The London Telegraph 2/26/12 by Investigations Editor Jason Lewis. The incident involved David S. Jones a military veteran of the Household Cavalry, who served in Malaya with the armored reconnaissance squadron, retired British fireman, author, and developer of the children’s character Fireman Sam (now an international success as a children’s TV series.). Mr Jones was detained, publicly humiliated and harassed at Gatwick airport by “security” personnel following a mere jocular, passing comment made to a security official noting that a Muslim woman in hijab was simultaneously passing through the security checkpoint without showing her face. Upon placing his belongings, including a scarf, into a tray to pass through the X-ray scanner Jones simply quipped, “If I was wearing this scarf over my face, I wonder what would happen.”

Thus, for instance, when I hear that Afghans and other Muslims are rioting and murdering people — including American soldiers — because the American military burned some Korans at Bagram Airfield in Kabul, I try very hard not to harrumph and start spouting such banalities as: “Ungrateful savages and their benighted religion! Ought to be gunned down, the lot of them!” Sure, the Korans had already been defaced by detainees trying to send extremist messages. And yes, American officials from the president down to a guy cleaning latrines at FOB Kalagush have apologized profusely. But before we condemn the rioters, American flag burners and murderers out of hand, let’s be fair.

Importing Violence: Immigration, Crime, and Why We Need Assimilation

A Third World culture of misogyny comes to America.

by Rob Taylor – February 28, 2012

When he was arrested for burglary in early 2006, Kesler Dufrene, a Haitian native residing in Florida’s Manatee County, already had a long history of sometimes violent criminality. His first arrest was at age 14 when he assaulted a teacher, and he has built up a long rap sheet since then. Often described as a drifter, Dufrene was caught burglarizing a home in July of 2006. Already on probation for theft, a judge gave him five years and ordered him deported after serving his sentence.

He never was. Dufrene emerged from prison in 2010 during a moratorium on deportations to Haiti enacted by the Obama administration. Due to his history, he was being “supervised” by immigration authorities, but that supervision was lax to say the least. Weeks after his release Dufrene committed a vicious, seemingly random triple homicide. One of the victims was a 15-year-old girl.

Oh, and I was physically attacked at Toronto University last year when speaking at several campuses as the Jewish community’s spokesman against the grotesquely named “Israel Apartheid Week.”

My Israel bodyguard, however, saved the day — and my bacon. Whoops, I said bacon. That must make me an anti-Semite. Canadian TV Host Insinuates Jews Control Hollywood

February 23, 2012 - Rabbi Shmuley Boteach

Today I had what was probably the most unpleasant TV interview of my life on Canada’s Sun News Network (national). Interviewed by host Michael Coren about my book Kosher Jesus, I expected to be asked about the book’s content. The interview started that way. But then Coren quickly got to a question that seemed to be bursting from within. You’ll have to see the exact show, airing tonight at 7pm, for complete accuracy, and I am writing this about an hour after.

Coren essentially asked me why Jews depict Christians so negatively. He went on about how much the Catholic Church and Christians in general have done for the Jews of late. Yet the Jews continue to be so unappreciative, always questioning Christian motivation, always finding fault with Christians no matter what.

The Palestinization of UNESCO

by Bat Ye’or – November 2011

Dhimmitude No ThanksIn January 1981 the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Summit meeting in Mecca declared that, “Palestine should be viewed as the paramount issue of Muslim nations.” Since then Europe hastened to adopt this path as well and has provided for the Palestinization of the cultural, social and above all political life of Europe.

For three decades, Europe obeyed the OIC in a servile manner. The EU has effectively created a major problem for itself that is eating away and destroying it. The EU made Palestine the hub of its international policy, transforming it into a symbol of peace and universal harmony, in a world that would not know “justice” until its coming. The only obstacle to this paradise is the Machiavellian Israel, the oppressor and usurper of Palestine, whose purity as a peaceful victim is the harbinger of global justice.

Contentions No Moral Equivalence Between Abbas and Netanyahu

Jonathan S. Tobin | September 23, 2011

The media is already treating the dueling speeches today at the United Nations General Assembly by Palestinian Authority head Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as morally equivalent. But such a view of these addresses would be dead wrong.

To put it bluntly, Abbas lied, and Netanyahu told the truth.

Abbas based his claim for the United Nations to allow him to bypass negotiations and to get a state without first making peace with Israel on the notion Israel’s presence in the West Bank and Jerusalem is “the last occupation.” That would be news to the Kurds and a host of other ethnic groups large and small throughout the globe who have suffered as much if not more than the Palestinians, but who have never been considered worthy of an independent state by the international community.

Bill Clinton: Netanyahu killed the peace process

By Josh Rogin – September 22, 2011

Who’s to blame for the continued failure of the Middle East peace process? Former President Bill Clinton said today that it is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — whose government moved the goalposts upon taking power, and whose rise represents a key reason there has been no Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

Clinton, in a roundtable with bloggers today on the sidelines of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, gave an extensive recounting of the deterioration in the Middle East peace process since he pressed both parties to agree to a final settlement at Camp David in 2000. He said there are two main reasons for the lack of a comprehensive peace today: the reluctance of the Netanyahu administration to accept the terms of the Camp David deal and a demographic shift in Israel that is making the Israeli public less amenable to peace.

Last ditch attempt to kick-start Middle East peace talks launched by main powers after Palestinian statehood bid

The major international powers have launched a last-ditch attempt to breathe life back into moribund Middle East peace talks after Palestinians sought statehood at the United Nations.

By Philip Sherwell, New York – 24 Sep 2011

The US, EU, UN and Russia outlined a 15-month timeline to reach a deal immediately after Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, defied American pressure and lodged a statehood request with the UN Security Council.

Negotiators from the Quartet grouping did not address the entrenched preconditions laid down by Israel and Palestine as they tried to break the stalemate and prod them back to talks.

But uncompromising speeches at the UN by Mr Abbas and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister – and the heated response to their words – signalled that the gulf between the two sides is only growing deeper.

Obama’s Focus at the UN: Getting Passionate about Israel

By Robert Satloff – September 22, 2011

On the emotive issue of the Palestinian request for UN admission as a state, Obama delivered one of the most impassioned statements in support of Israel ever made by an American president in the well of the General Assembly.

President Obama’s speech at the United Nations yesterday may have lacked both the thematic power of his other major speeches on the world stage — “the pursuit of peace in an imperfect world” is not likely to capture imaginations — as well as new, bold ideas to address Iran’s push for nuclear weapons or the deepening humanitarian crisis in Syria. But on the emotive issue of the Palestinian request for UN admission as a state, Obama delivered one of the most impassioned statements in support of Israel ever made by an American president in the well of the General Assembly.

Israel at the U.N.: A Sucker’s Game

Caroline Glick  – September 25, 2011

This week’s Palestinian-statehood extravaganza at the U.N. is being billed as something of a modern-day showdown at the O.K. Corral. If the Palestinians gain recognition of their state, then Israel is the big loser. And if the Palestinians fail to gain U.N. recognition of “Palestine” as a member state, then Israel is the big winner.

But the situation is more complex. By going to the U.N., the Palestinians have shown their absolute bad faith in previous negotiations with Israel, and indeed exposed the entire peace process as a lie. The peace process was based on the assumption that a Palestinians state could emerge only at the end of a comprehensive peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians. That is, such a state would be at peace with Israel.

By bypassing negotiations, the Palestinians seek to gain a state that will be born in a state of war with Israel.

Palestinian Arabs: Once they were the weapons of Arab Socialism. Now they are the weapons of Islam

The End of Palestine

Daniel Greenfield – September 19, 2011

In the spring of 1964, while the Vietnam War was underway, the space program had brought close up photos of the moon, and the Beatles were topping the charts; the Arab League convened to try and find a way to complete the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Israel. They had tried it once before in 1948, with incomplete results. Back then, the Arab forces had managed to capture and ethnically cleanse the eastern half of Jerusalem, as well as seizing and annexing the West Bank and Gaza. But for 16 years, Israel had managed to frustrate their designs by stubbornly continuing to exist.

What the Arab governments wanted was a terrorist organization that could cross the border and carry out attacks inside Israel. And they wanted plausible deniability so that Israel and the UN couldn’t hold them responsible for those attacks. And so cloaked in a lot of smoke and mirrors about “Palestinian Arab nationhood”, the Palestine Liberation Organization was born.

The PLO had three tasks, to harass Israel through terror, to cultivate a fifth column inside the country that would come into play in an invasion, and to make it seem as if the Arab world wasn’t a bunch of genocidal maniacs, but wanted to destroy Israel in the name of “Palestinian rights”.

Mahmoud Abbas Denies Jewish Links to Israel

September 23, 2011 – Alan Elsner

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas presented a bid for full membership in the United Nations on Friday, knowing that he lacked the votes to bring the matter to the Security Council. He then delivered a harsh, distorted, hate-filled speech to the General Assembly.

Abbas blamed the failure of the peace process entirely on Israel. He said he would not return to negotiations unless Israel freezes building in the territories. Israel is ready to renew negotiations immediately—but without preconditions.

This UN bid for statehood will not help the Palestinian cause

Negotiating with Israel may be exhausting and frustrating, but if Palestinians really want a state, they must persevere

Einat Wilf – 22 September 2011

Well-meaning world leaders, supporters of peace, even friends of Israel, are under the impression that in supporting the Palestinian gambit in the UN, they are supporting the cause of Palestinian statehood and peace. They could not be more wrong.

In my years in public policy and foreign affairs, I learned that we would do well to listen to what Palestinian leaders say publicly. We mistakenly assume that what they say in private is of greater value, but it is their public pronouncements that are truly binding. Abbas said in the New York Times on 17 May that “Palestine’s admission to the United Nations would pave the way for the internationalisation of the conflict as a legal matter, not only a political one”, and pave the way “to pursue claims against Israel at the United Nations, human rights treaty bodies and the International Court of Justice”.

Interview: Refugees will not be citizens of new state

By Annie Slemrod – September 15, 2011

Palestinian refugees will not become citizens of a new Palestinian state, according to Palestine’s ambassador to Lebanon.

From behind a desk topped by a miniature model of Palestine’s hoped-for blue United Nations chair, Ambassador Abdullah Abdullah spoke to The Daily Star Wednesday about Palestine’s upcoming bid for U.N. statehood.

The ambassador unequivocally says that Palestinian refugees would not become citizens of the sought for U.N.-recognized Palestinian state, an issue that has been much discussed. “They are Palestinians, that’s their identity,” he says. “But … they are not automatically citizens.”

This would not only apply to refugees in countries such as Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Jordan or the other 132 countries where Abdullah says Palestinians reside. Abdullah said that “even Palestinian refugees who are living in [refugee camps] inside the [Palestinian] state, they are still refugees. They will not be considered citizens.”

Palestinians vent anger at U.S. over statehood issue

By Sheera Frenkel | September 22, 2011

Ramallah, West Bank — Palestinian protesters burned effigies of President Barack Obama and stomped on U.S. flags Thursday in one of the largest recent displays of anti-American sentiment here, sparked by the United States’ pledge to veto any request for U.N. membership for a Palestinian state.

Don’t reward the Palestinians’ ‘lawfare’ campaign with statehood: Make peace with Israel first

By Rory Lancman and Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld – September 22nd 2011

The United Nations’ potential blessing of a Palestinian state in an end run around direct negotiations with Israel will add a dangerous new dimension to the Palestinians’ decades-long campaign of conventional and unconventional war against the Jewish state – the commencement of a full-blown “lawfare” campaign against Israel and its allies.

UN-sanctioned lawfare against Israel is nothing new. In 2004, the International Court of Justice (ICC), at the instigation of the UN General Assembly, declared that the security fence Israel erected to block Palestinian terrorists from infiltrating from the West Bank – a fence which helped dramatically reduce the number of suicide bombers penetrating Israel – is illegal, even though many countries, including the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, have erected fences on their border. Did we mention that Israel is the only UN member state barred from serving on the International Court?

Jews have human rights, too

By Roz Rothstein and Roberta Seid – August 22, 2011

Until Palestinians recognize this, we will never have peace

The recent coordinated terrorist attacks on Israel and the latest poll of Palestinian public opinion offer insight into why Middle East peace remains so elusive: The Palestinian public is simply unwilling to recognize the human rights of Jews.

Consider Palestinians’ reactions to the grisly coordinated attacks against Israel last Thursday. Terrorists assaulted travelers and soldiers in the South with gunfire, mortars, anti-tank missiles and two suicide bombers. Eight civilians – including two kindergarten teachers and their husbands who were going to vacation in Eilat – and two soldiers were murdered; 30 were wounded. A four-year-old and a sevenyear- old child were among those hurt.
