Molly Norris: Awlaki, killed in drone attack, issued 2010 death threat against ‘Draw Muhammad’ cartoonist

By Michael Cavna – October 3, 2011

Muhammed Cartoon IconIt stands out as one of the more memorable e-mails I’ve ever received. The Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki had just placed a Seattle cartoonist on an execution hit list. Federal authorities were talking with the artist about her safety. And the artist was still trying to distance herself from having rendered, months earlier, the “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day” cartoon that sparked international controversy. Her e-mail began with two simple words:

“Fatwas suck.”

Talk about your intentional understatement.

Video: Multikulturen fungerer ikke i England

John Cleese har igen udtalt kritik af multikulturen, – denne gang i et australsk interview hos ABC. John Cleese siger blandt andet – fra The Daily Mail:

The comic was asked what he thought about British culture and the recent London riots during an interview on 7.30, a television show in Australia, where he is currently on a stand-up tour.

He replied: ‘I’m not sure what’s going on in Britain. Or, let me say this – I don’t know what’s going on in London, because London is no longer an English city.

‘That’s how we got the Olympics.

‘They said we were the  most cosmopolitan city on Earth. But it doesn’t feel English.

‘I had a Californian friend come over two months ago, walk down the King’s Road and say, “Where are all the English people?”

‘I mean, I love having different cultures around. But when the parent culture kind of dissipates, you’re left thinking, “Well, what’s going on?”‘

Man kan se hele interviewet i denne video:

Jødehadet i England er skræmmende. Man må håbe, at englændere med jødisk tro forstår alvoren og forlader landet meget hurtigt. Nu går den ikke længere. Endnu en video:

Israel Philharmonic Orchestra concert disrupted by protest

Thursday’s BBC Proms performance by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall was interrupted by protests by the pro-Palestinian group BDS London. A live broadcast of the concert on BBC Radio 3 was taken off air because of ‘sustained audience disturbance’. The performance continued after the demonstrators left the venue

Stephen Pollard fra The Telegraph har forstået, hvad det drejer sig om:

A Proms protest with a whiff of Weimar about it

The demonstration at the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra BBC Proms concert was against Jews, not the Israeli state

By Stephen Pollard – 02 Sep 2011

Until Thursday night, nothing in the history of Proms broadcasts had forced a concert off air. Certainly not the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. On the very night the tanks moved into Prague, the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich was at the Proms with the USSR Symphony Orchestra. And he was performing, with intense poignancy, the Czech composer Dvorak’s cello concerto. I have a cherished recording of the concert. The audience was rapt and not a word was uttered.

When Chinese performers grace the Proms with their presence, there is not a word of protest about their government’s abuses of human rights. Nor should there be. They are musicians, not politicians.

Christopher Hitchens om Gaddafi og tidsskriftet, Private Eye

To ret forskellige artikler:

The Crimes of Col. Qaddafi

In the euphoria of the current celebrations, we must not lose sight of the former leader’s foul deeds.

By Christopher Hitchens – Aug. 25, 2011

Logo Slate

In George Orwell’s 1939 novel, Coming Up for Air, his narrator, George Bowling, broods on the special horrors of the new totalitarianism and notices “the colored shirts, the barbed wire, the rubber truncheons,” but also, less obviously perhaps, “the processions and the posters with enormous faces, and the crowds of a million people all cheering for the Leader till they deafen themselves into thinking that they really worship him, and all the time, underneath, they hate him so that they want to puke.”

It was particularly satisfying to see, in the filling of Green Square in Tripoli and the over-running of the vulgar Xanadu of Muammar Qaddafi’s so-called private “compound,” the use as real space of areas that had hitherto been reserved for that special kind of degradation and humiliation—the rally for The Leader. Picture four decades in which compulsory attendance at such a ritual—kissing your owner’s feet and shouting his praises in unison—was a major cultural activity. So addicted was Qaddafi to this sadomasochistic enactment that he, and his ghastly sons, continued it until the very last minutes. So, of course, did Saddam Hussein. So, as we speak, does Bashar Assad. In the nightmare state so cherished by such fantasy rulers, mere acquiescence or subjection is not enough. You must become a full participant in your own oppression, and find it in yourself to adore the collectivization of compulsory enthusiasm.

The Accidental Institution

This fall, Private Eye marks its 50th anniversary with an exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum—which suggests that a proudly scurrilous scandal rag has found a place in the British establishment. Score one for the dogged practitioners of muckraking and satire.

By Christopher Hitchens – September 2011

At whose expense comes the mild irony when, this fall, the cheaply produced scandal sheet Private Eye will have an exhibition of its cartoons and pictorial covers at the Victoria and Albert Museum, a building consecrated to taste and restraint? Perhaps the show’s modest title furnishes a clue: “ Private Eye: The First 50 Years.” Keep in mind that, a half-century ago, the British establishment was almost as near in time to its Victorian forebears as we are to the half-forgotten names—like Harold Macmillan (who even in his own day was described as an Edwardian)—who were so pitilessly lampooned in Private Eye’ s first issues. Everybody Remember Molly Norris Day

by David J. Rusin  •  May 20, 2011

Logo Islamist Watch

May 20 is the first anniversary of Everybody Draw Mohammed Day, which was conceived by Seattle illustrator Molly Norris to champion free speech but became yet another symbol of its curtailment. Professor and commentator Karen Lugo has urged Americans to remember Norris as “inspiration in our cause to never accommodate threats of retaliation for exercising our fundamental liberties.” Islamist Watch does its small part by revisiting the Norris affair below.

Everybody Draw Mohammed Day serves as a critical case study of the forces that imperil Americans’ ability to speak openly about Islam. Indeed, examination of its full context reveals almost all of the elements that contribute to this anti-freedom trend. In order of their appearance:
