Revenge of the Sunnis

What the Arab Spring is really about.

By Edward Luttwak | December 7, 2011

Logo Foreign Policy MagazineThe last decade has been marked by the rise of the Shiites in the Middle East. Through the bullet and the ballot box, Shiite parties have risen to power from Baghdad to Beirut — thereby extending Iran’s reach into the heart of the Arab world. Sunni rulers have viewed with much anxiety the new “Shiite crescent” that extends from Iran all the way to Lebanon.

But as a popular — and now military — uprising in Syria becomes more powerful, the Shiite ascendancy is coming to an end. With every day that passes, President Bashar al-Assad’s grip on power seems to weaken: The United Nations assessed on Nov. 1 that Syria had entered a state of civil war and the country’s economy is projected to contract by a disastrous 12 percent to 20 percent this year. And now, the regional Sunni powers are hoping to exploit the turmoil to launch a counteroffensive that could reverse their losses.

Citizen Islam: The Future of Muslim Integration in the West by Zeyno Baran – Continuum, 240 pp., $24.95

Logo The New Republic SmallIn the divisive, decade-old War on Terror, one certitude unites the warriors and the conscientious objectors. It is that Islamism is not to be confused with Islam. “Whatever it’s called,” George W. Bush said, “this ideology is very different from the religion of Islam.” Attorney General Eric Holder described the Islamism of the late Anwar al-Awlaki as “a version of Islam that is not consistent with the teachings of it.” Zeyno Baran has come reluctantly to the conclusion that the Bush/Holder view is false. Her new book describes how Islamists have captured many Islamic religious and social institutions, including most of the Western ones. Islamism has supplanted more traditional tendencies and has become what most people, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, understand as mainstream Islam. Gullible American and European policymakers have partnered with the wrong Muslims, freezing out their friends and empowering those who wish them ill.

Knowledge Without Knowledge

by Theodore Dalrymple – November 2011

Recently I reviewed a short book by David Horowitz, a man whose has changed his political and philosophical outlook somewhat down the years, to put it no stronger. He has mellowed with age, a process that seems perfectly normal, indeed almost biological, until one remembers than not everyone does mellow with age. Some remain mired in the swamp of their youthful convictions.

As it happens, I had in my library a book edited in 1971 by Mr Horowitz, in the days when he as still a leader of the American New Left. It was a collection of essays about the life and work of Isaac Deutscher, the British Marxist biographer of Stalin and, most famously, of Trotsky. Deutscher was also a prolific journalist and essayist.

Muslims in Spain Declare Jihad on Dogs

by Soeren Kern – October 6, 2011

Spanish authorities are investigating the recent deaths by poisoning of more than a dozen dogs in Lérida, a city in the northeastern region of Catalonia that has become ground zero in an intensifying debate over the role of Islam in Spain.

Smiliey Dog

All of the dogs were poisoned in September (local media reports here, here, here, here and here) in Lérida’s working class neighbourhoods of Cappont and La Bordeta, districts that are heavily populated by Muslim immigrants and where many dogs have been killed in recent years.

Local residents say Muslim immigrants killed the dogs because according to Islamic teaching dogs are “unclean” animals.

Muslim Hijab Sparks New Islam-Related Controversy in Spain

by Soeren Kern – October 13, 2011

A Muslim schoolgirl in Spain has been suspended from a public school in Madrid after refusing to remove her Islamic headscarf during an exam.

The girl’s parents have filed a lawsuit against the school and the incident has reignited a long-running debate in Spain over the use of head-covering hijabs, face-covering niqabs and body-covering burqas in public spaces.

The latest dustup occurred in late September when a teacher at the Enrique Tierno Galván public school in Madrid asked the 14-year-old student to remove her hijab (headscarf) during an exam.

Sharialov i Danmark

Jyllands-Posten skriver, at Naser Khader vil have integrationsminister, Søren Pind, til at undersøge sagen.

Går deres egne børn i ghettoskoler?

Sharia Enclaves in the West

By Ryan Mauro – 12 August, 2011

Logo AINA Banner

Islamist organizations are hard at work creating Muslim enclaves in the West, including right here in the United States. These efforts are designed to create Islamic autonomous areas, often with the expressed desire of incrementally bringing the host country completely under Sharia-based governance. This campaign has not stopped or even slowed down since FrontPage Magazine and the Middle East Forum shined the light on it one year ago.

One group leading the effort to establish Islamist communities within the U.S. is As-Sabiqun, led by an extremist cleric named Imam Abdul Alim Musa. His list of heroes reads like a who’s-who of the jihadist world, from Hasan al-Banna to Sayyid Qutb to Ayatollah Khomeini. He recently heaped praise upon Iranian President Ahmadinejad. In June 2002, he expressed support for suicide bombings in Israel. He preaches that the 9/11 attacks were a CIA/Mossad operation, says he “like[s]” Osama Bin Laden, supports Hezbollah, and describes Hamas as being “very nice people.” The As-Sabiqun Web site has a plan to create Sharia enclaves in the U.S. in stages, beginning with moving Muslims to one area and setting up independent social services.

I warned about this years ago. Now ministers admit I was right

By Melanie Phillips on 8th June 2011

Now they tell us. Ministers have finally admitted what I revealed in my book, Londonistan, back in 2006 and have written many times since then – that, incredible as it may seem, hundreds of thousands of pounds of public money that was supposed to be spent on countering Islamic extremism has gone to groups or individuals actually promoting Islamic extremism.

Logo Daily Mail Online

Paralysed by political correctness, the previous Labour government, the intelligence agencies, police, universities and other institutions decided to try to promote ‘moderate’ Muslim groups to tackle the extremists.

As a result of refusing to listen to the many warnings that such a policy would not work because of doubts about how ‘moderate’ these groups actually were, they got it terribly wrong.

Ballade i Bangladesh

Bangladesh: The Constitution vs. Sharia Law as Islamists Threaten Violence

by Nina Rosenwald – March 14, 2011

Logo Hudson New York

Several Islamist leaders announced Friday their plans to start a jihad, or holy war, if the Supreme Court decides to declare Fatwas –or religious edicts by clergy or Islamic Sharia Law courts– illegal. Fatwas, according to Bangladesh’s Constitution, already are illegal; the ruling was reaffirmed several years ago by the lower High Court, which voted to uphold the Constitution. As Fatwas persist, however, the ruling was recently challenged in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, which will now be reviewing the decision. It is scheduled to issue its ruling on March 21.

What triggered the review, according to the Bangladeshi media, was the recent judgment by a Sharia Law Court against a 14-year-old girl, Hena, who after being raped, was sentenced to 100 lashes; during the flogging, she slipped into a coma, then died — while her rapist walks around free.

Bangladesh: Supreme Court Seeks Opinion on Fatwas

by Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury  – March 12, 2011

In a fatwa, issued last month during arbitration by the clergy, Hena, a 14-year-old rape victim, was ordered to receive100 lashes, while the alleged rapist was at large. The girl fainted halfway through the flogging and later died. The Bangladesh Supreme Court has reopened this case.

Taking up a 10-year old pending appeal, Bangladesh Supreme Court has sought the opinion of Islamic scholars on the status and application of fatwa or Islamic religious edicts. The Director General of Islamic Foundation in Bangladesh has been asked by the court to table the opinions of the Muslim scholars by March 21, 2011. The Muslim scholars can appear in person if they prefer to give verbal statement on the issue.

Surrendering to Islamists in Bangladesh

by Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury – March 28, 2011

Radical Islamist leaders, such as Mufti Fazlul Huq Amini, Moulana Rezaul Karim and their followers, are continuing to flex their muscles to signal the government in Bangladesh, the third-largest Muslim country in the world, that any decision that runs counter to Sharia Law or the fatwa [an Islamic religious-court edict, illegal under Bangladesh's constitution]will be confronted by these elements. A few days ago, Mufti Amini and Moulana Rezaul Karim called upon their followers to rage Jihad [holy war]against anyone attempting to ban the fatwa or pass any law which might go against the “Koran and Sunnah.”

Since the secularist Bangladesh Awami League, the purportedly secularist party, came to power in January 2009, people expected that the muscle-flexing of radical Islamists would stop, as the ruling party always stated that it would ensure equal rights for every citizen of Bangladesh.

What future for Islamism now?

Friday 25th February 2011 – Shiraz Maher

Pity the Islamists; the rug has been pulled out from under their feet.

There is a lot of debate at the moment about what the fallout from the Middle East’s uprisings will mean for the region. Is this the start of an Islamist uprising or the birth pangs of a more liberal and pluralistic Arab world?

I recently returned from Egypt where I was covering events in Tahrir Square for this magazine. My thoughts are expressed in my dispatch – but, in summary, I think those predicting the worst are way off the mark.

Consider Wael Ghonim. Google’s marketing manager in Dubai, he represents Egypt’s upwardly mobile, affluent middle-class. He created the “we are all Khalid Said” facebook page that first sparked the unrest in Cairo. When the trouble started, rather than watch it on al-Jazeera, he left the security and comfort of Dubai to join the protesters in Tahrir Square.

Gaining Control Through Democracy: The New Strategy of Muslim Brotherhood

Dr. Mark A. Gabriel – February 24, 2011

Logo Family Security MattersAs the whole world breathlessly watches events unfolding in the Middle East and North Africa, everyone is wondering whether these revolutions will usher in democracy and human rights, or just a new type of oppression for the people in the form of Islamic states ruling with the cruel, merciless fist of Islamic law.

The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung took the first step toward answering this question by interviewing Hussein Mahmoud, who is the general secretary of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and was imprisoned three times during Mubarek’s rule for his Muslim Brotherhood involvement. The Muslim Brotherhood is a key factor in understanding what may happen in Egypt, which is the most influential nation in the region. If Egypt falls into the hands of a government based on Islamist philosophy, the whole region will be influenced in that direction.

Let’s talk about a caliphate

By Diana West | Feb. 25, 2011

I almost forgot how the Pundit Right smacked down Glenn Beck over his wholly rational concern that out of Tahrir Square a new caliphate might arise in the Islamic world until I read William Kristol’s op-ed this week.

Earlier this month, Weekly Standard editor and Fox analyst Kristol had led off the anti-Beck attack with a heated column accusing Beck of “hysteria” for his “rants about the caliphate taking over the Middle East” and connections to the American Left. Kristol was seconded by National Review editor Rich Lowry. The New York Times’ David Brooks entered the debate lambasting Beck for his “delusional ravings about the caliphate coming back” while “the conservative establishment” saw Mubarak’s fall as “a fulfillment of Ronald Reagan’s democracy dream.” (Count me out.)

The Trumpet has long identified Jerusalem as radical Islam’s ultimate prize. One million protesters recently agreed.

When news broke last week that a female cbs reporter had been beaten and molested in Tahrir Square, the Western world reacted with justifiable rage and sympathy.

Marginalized amid the ruckus, however, was an important and telling tidbit of information: Lara Logan’s traumatic ordeal, which including being stripped, groped, punched, pinched and beaten with flagpoles, was accompanied by chants of “Jew, Jew” and accusations that Logan was an “Israeli spy.”

Egypt, the Middle East and the Obama Doctrine

by Guy Millière – February 24, 2011

The most common – but incorrect–description of the storm that has just shaken Egypt is that it was born spontaneously of a large popular discontent.

There was and still is discontent among the Egyptian people, but the spark that ignited the powder was not spontaneous at all. It is now known (“The Secret Meeting* That Sparked The Uprising,” The Wall Street Journal, February 11th 2011) that a group of activists met several weeks before the start of the uprising to organize a series of events carefully designed to thwart the actions of security forces, and that these activists included members of various organizations of the left, the extreme left, and Islamists.

Egypt: Year Zero

Bernard-Henri Lévy – February 25, 2011

This is where it all started and where, more than ever, it is all still happening. Imagine a vast square the size of Times Square In New York. Tanks sit at the mouth of each of the streets leading into the square. Children have climbed up on the tanks and are talking with the soldiers. The joyful crowd of half a million people, maybe more, includes young women, still girls really, with bared heads, who mingle with boys whose faces are painted in the three colors of the Egyptian flag. Pennants flutter overhead. Horns and trumpets sound. Fireworks burst in the sky. Banners pay homage to “martyrs,” to “the disappeared,” or, simply, to “Egypt”. Not once during the evening do I spot an anti-western slogan. There is the flavor of a county fair or a pregame rally for a football team. One of my group is even mistaken for a Portuguese soccer coach, hoisted onto a makeshift rostrum, and asked to say a few words. “Long live Tahrir!” he says. “You took Tahrir the way France took the Bastille. And here in Tahrir you have carried out the first revolution of the 21st century.” In response, the crowd roars, a clamorous sound that has risen from this Cairo-style Commune in Tahrir Square for three weeks now, almost without interruption. The Tahrir movement is sometimes faulted for having neither a program nor a leader, but it appears that Tahrir is the program and the people, as Sartre would say, their own leader.

The Arab Spring

by Ahmed Charai – February 23, 2011

Western policy experts are largely shocked at the breakdown of Arab dictatorships that only weeks ago seemed unbreakable. Leaders in the United States and Europe are struggling to weigh the pros and cons of continuing to support autocrats on the one hand — a choice which risks stoking anti-Western sentiment — and engaging revolutionaries on the other, a policy which may further destabilize the Arab region. Whatever decisions Western capitals reach, the bottom line is that not every Arab revolution is the same – nor will one country’s day-after scenario much resemble that of the next.

One thing is for sure in every Arab country now undergoing a transformation: As the Tunisian and Egyptian models have already begun to show, the absence of an organized democratic alternative to dictatorship is a guarantee of future turmoil. In Egypt, the army that was long the backbone of the regime has offered to safeguard the country’s political transition – but precisely what is the country transitioning into? A best-case scenario might follow the former Turkish model: a democracy in which the army both guarantees the electoral system and imposes some ground rules on foreign policy. But such an outcome is far from certain in a country without an Ataturk-like figure to unite the population.

How to Make Egypt Safe for Democracy

March 2011 – John Bolton

Hosni Mubarak’s resignation as president of Egypt, after thirty years of authoritarian rule, is a major seismic event in the unstable Middle East. Although not as shattering as the 1981 assassination of his predecessor, Anwar Sadat, Mubarak’s departure may actually pose more of a challenge to Egypt’s long-ruling military than either Sadat’s murder or the natural death of Gamal Nasser, the first officer in the modern military line after the 1952 overthrow of King Farouk.  The “regime” thereafter was the military itself; while Mubarak was obviously its apex in recent years, the military establishment as a whole governed, not just one man.

When Nasser and Sadat died, the collective military leadership knew its next step: have another military leader succeed his fallen predecessor.  That outcome seems very unlikely today, although not impossible.  In the short term, the military’s highest body, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, is in charge, having dissolved parliament and suspended the constitution, pending parliamentary and presidential elections to be scheduled. Whether there is a larger, longer-term political role for Egypt’s military (as in Pakistan and Turkey) remains to be seen.

A Realistic Democracy Project

Andrew McCarthy – February 25, 2011

John Bolton’s essay in Standpoint is terrific. Assessing the tumult in the Middle East, Egypt in particular, he argues for a careful, realistic promotion of democracy that is honest about how difficult it is to sow a true culture of democracy; clear-eyed about how premature introduction of democratic processes will only empower totalitarians; and insistent that — while we should always promote our principles — our overriding concern must be American national security.

Such a framework would obviously tie the extent of material support we are willing to give to the likelihood of concrete advances of American national interests, not to pie in the sky.

The Middle East’s Intifada

By Robert Spencer on Jan 31st, 2011

Robert Spencer 3Now that the Muslim Brotherhood has begun talks with opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei to form a national unity government after the fall of Mubarak, which apparently all concerned expect to be imminent, the character of the Egyptian revolution has become clearer. Whether or not the majority of demonstrators were pro-Sharia, the Brotherhood was the sole entity in Egypt capable of constituting an organized and energized vanguard that could put an ideological cast on the rapidly unfolding revolt. And so Egypt now stands on the brink of installing in power a group that wants to see it become an Islamic state.

Obama’s Brotherhood Moment

By Robert Spencer on Feb 2nd, 2011

Game over: Barack Obama has endorsed a role for the Muslim Brotherhood in a new, post-Mubarak government for Egypt.

This should come as no surprise. Obama has behaved consistently all along, from his refusal to back the protesters in Iran, who were demonstrating against an Islamic Republic, to his backing of these protesters in Egypt, to whom he has just given a green light to establish a government that, given numerous historical precedents, will likely be the precursor to an Islamic Republic.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday that a post-Mubarak Egyptian ruling group “has to include a whole host of important nonsecular actors that give Egypt a strong chance to continue to be [a] stable and reliable partner.”

Barack Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood

By Robert Spencer on Feb 3rd, 2011

Now that Barack Obama has given a green light to Muslim Brotherhood participation in a new Egyptian government, it is unlikely that the organization will be kept out of power. And since the Brotherhood is the largest and most ideologically committed group in Egyptian politics, most likely it will end up in the driver’s seat in any new regime, and set the nation on course toward becoming an Islamic state.

Obama almost certainly knows all this, and yet approved of Brotherhood involvement anyway. A look at some of his appointments, associations and activities shows that this should come as no surprise.

Pundits forsvarer Lars Hedegaard & Jesper Langballe

Retssagerne imod Lars Hedegaard og Jesper Langballe forårsager meget stor skade på Danmarks omdømme i udlandet. Her er et udvalg af den senere tids engelsksprogede pressedækning – Melanie Phillips, Phyllis Chesler, Kathy Shaidle, Andrew Bostom, Daniel Huff, David Solway, Ann Snyder, Alyssa A. Lappen, Henryk Broder, Katrine Winkel Holm, Diana West, Rachel Ehrenfeld, Salim Mansur:

The Danish witch-hunt against the truth-tellers

By Melanie Phillips – 11th January 2011

Over the past week or so, Britain’s media have finally been forced to confront the fact that Muslim pimping gangs in the UK have been abducting, drugging, raping and abusing mainly white girls, along with Hindus and Sikhs, and further ‘grooming’ them for sex in a clear display of hostility towards ‘unbelievers’. Hitherto this phenomenon was not only kept from the public by a paralysed media class which refuses to confront Islamic outrages, but it appears that the police have often dragged their feet in pursuing such gangs as a result of the same politically correct paralysis. I wrote about this in the Mail yesterday.

Logo Melanie Phillips Spectator Blog Grey SmallIn Denmark, however, a campaigner for freedom of speech is actually to go on trial later this month for daring to bring this kind of thing to light. Lars Hedegaard is President of the Danish Free Press Society and The International Free Press Society. A while back the DFPS kindly presented me with an award for my work. When I met Hedegaard I observed that, in campaigning against hate speech laws which censored and suppressed necessary discussion of the Islamic threat to free speech and other human rights in the west, he was himself running the risk of being silenced by Denmark’s thought police.

The Death of Free Speech in Europe: On Trial in Denmark for “Islamophobia”

by Phyllis Chesler - January 10 2011

On January 24, 2011, the distinguished Lars Hedegaard, the President of the Danish Free Press Society and the International Free Press Society, will stand trial for telling the truth about Islamic gender apartheid.

Europe, once the birthplace of freedom, is fast becoming its graveyard.

True, the Church tortured and burned many geniuses as heretics; Dutch Jews excommunicated Spinoza; wars for religious supremacy raged for hundreds of years. Still, concepts such as free speech and individual human rights over and above the divine rights of Kings gradually ruled the European zeitgeist. Americans and other former colonists romanticized Europe as “the” place for artists, free thinkers, and free spirits.

Punishing the Victims of Islamic Gender Apartheid?

by Phyllis Chesler – Jan 13th, 2011

She is marked for certain death.

Her final hearing takes place on Friday, January 14, 2011. If American Immigration decides to deport her back to her Muslim family in Africa, she will, without doubt, first be genitally mutilated and then honor murdered for insisting on remaining a Christian, for having fled an arranged Muslim marriage—and for having secretly married a Christian man.

I doubt she will be able to take her case to the United Nations. After all, that august body has condemned free speech/truth speech as hate speech, especially where Islam is concerned. Incredibly, presumably “progressive” European countries have increasingly launched criminal investigations against their own politicians, human rights activists, academics for daring to tell the truth about Islamic gender apartheid if that truth shows Islam in a negative light.

I refuse to say ‘not all Muslims.’ Who’s with me?

by Kathy Shaidle – January 11 2011

[...] So why do we insist upon using that unwieldy formula, “not all Muslims…”?

Everyone who goes to the trouble of uttering the painfully obvious and obligatory “not all Muslims” line gets persecuted and prosecuted anyway — in Mark Steyn’s case, for the very article in which he used the words, “not all Muslims;” in fact, the Muslims who took him to court specifically objected to Steyn’s “sarcastic tone” while employing it. You see, he was being insufficiently respectful when excusing them from their own crime-in-progress.

As you can see from that last tortured sentence, writing about the battle against stealth jihad is difficult enough without handicapping ourselves, a la “Harrison Bergeron”, to appease unappeasable enemies.

Will Conservative Media Elites Defend Lars Hedegaard?

It is long past time for our media figures to pay attention to the “hate speech” prosecutions of our brethren in Denmark.

January 10, 2011 – by Andrew G. Bostom

This past Friday I received a plaintive appeal on behalf of my colleague, Danish journalist and historian Lars Hedegaard — President of the Danish Free Press Society and The International Free Press Society (IFPS). My response to the appeal is included at the end of this essay as a succinct guide to Islamically perplexed, high-profile U.S. conservative media elites who, until now, have entirely ignored the burgeoning crisis epitomized by Lars Hedegaard’s current plight. It is well past time for these self-anointed champions of free speech to weigh-in publicly and offer a robust defense of my colleague –and theirs.

The latest terrorist tactic: litigation

by Daniel Huff – January 11, 2011

On December 29, Scandinavian authorities arrested five terrorists planning an attack in Denmark. Almost as interesting as what they targeted is what they spared and the lessons it holds for future counterterrorism efforts.

The plot was to storm the Copenhagen newsroom of Jyllands Posten and murder its staff. It was the fourth attempt this year by Islamic extremists to punish the newspaper that published the Mohammed cartoons. But the terrorists are guilty of selective prosecution. They have yet to strike Politiken, which also published the cartoons, even though its offices are literally next door.

The New Totalitarians

David Solway – Dec 28th, 20

The so-called “socialist revolution,” which the collapse of the Soviet Union and the implosion of the European welfare state should have soundly discredited by this time, is still running its course. This is the case not only in Latin America, where it seems to be embedded in the national psyche, but, despite recent electoral setbacks, in the United States as well. So counter-intuitive a phenomenon is partially explained by the lust for power among political strongmen and numinous redeemers who understand that socialism enables them to consolidate the power they crave in their own hands. But it also requires the backing of intellectuals and academics who naively believe that socialism opens the way to a juster and more equable society. History teaches that such a chimera is catastrophic in the application. It is generally embraced as an ideal by an intellectual class isolated from the lives of ordinary people and therefore immune or indifferent to reality.

I Confess, Too.

Ann Snyder – December 22, 2010

I must confess. Rhetorically, that is. I don’t want to give European prosecutors any ideas should I travel abroad!

Perhaps you should confess, too. If you have ever publicly expressed an opinion that somebody, somewhere, might deem offensive, chances are you may have violated any one or number of the “hate speech” laws that have proliferated throughout Europe.

The language of some of these laws is sweeping. These perhaps once, well-intentioned efforts to prevent discrimination now no longer merely threaten to eviscerate free speech rights; they are eviscerating them. Europeans must speak up now, while they still can and remove these insidious laws from the books once and for all.

Though Europe Rots, We Must Defend the West

With free speech under attack, our civilization’s survival is at stake.

January 18, 2011 – by Alyssa A. Lappen

Defending Lars Hedegaard’s right to free speech equals defending the right of Western civilization to survive. As editor, columnist, and Danish and International Free Press Society president, Hedegaard dares to exercise his right to criticize Islam as freely as one may Christianity or Judaism. [1]

Barring an effective international outcry — or a rare fever of Sudden Enlightenment Syndrome striking common sense into the head of Denmark’s public prosecutor — Hedegaard will face trial on Danish racism charges and conviction alike on January 24, 2011: a veritable auto da fé. [2]

Kronik: Budbringeren for retten

Katrine Winkel Holm: Den 24. januar skal Lars Hedegaard møde i Frederiksberg Ret. Anklaget for hate-speech.

A Muslim asks that Denmark reprieve herself from being cast in the verdict of history as an “executioner” of free speech

by Salim Mansur, PhD January 13, 2011

I am writing this letter in support of Mr. Lars Hedegaard, the President of the Danish Free Press Society and the International Free Press Society, and to add my voice to the many who stand together with him in defending free speech.

We are appalled that the Danish public prosecutor is proceeding with the indictment of Mr. Lars Hedegaard for “hate speech” against Muslims in Denmark. I am a Muslim, a citizen of and a resident in Canada. But as a concerned Muslim I am more deeply troubled by the Danish public prosecutor out to undermine the principle of free speech, and weaken liberal democracy as a result, than anything Mr. Lars Hedegaard has said in public or published about Islam and Muslims.

Terror Expert Phares: Christmas Prime Time for Jihad Attack

By Henry J. Reske and Kathleen Walter – 20 Dec 2010

Al-Qaida has spawned a new generation of homegrown jihadists who are harder to detect but just as deadly as those who inflicted the 9/11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000, terror expert Walid Phares tells Newsmax.TV. These budding terrorists focus on inflicting pain at symbolic times, which makes the Christmas season a prime period to attack, says Phares, an adviser to the Anti-Terrorism Caucus in the U.S. House.

“We’re not dealing anymore with the Mohamed Atta-type of the 19 who attacked us on 9/11,” Phares said in the exclusive Newsmax.TV interview. “We’re dealing with people who are born in the West and in America and in Western Europe, people who have converted. I mean we’re talking about from the shoe bomber to Jihad Jane.”

The up-and-coming, homegrown terrorists are just as “adamant and determined to attack liberal democracies both in Europe and in the United States. They are known to be very symbolical, so Christmas holidays, this is what they’d like to do,” said Phares, whose new book is “The Coming Revolution: Struggle for Freedom in the Middle East.”
