Christopher Caldwell om Thilo Sarrazin

Om EU, Tyskland og Sarrazins nye bog:

You wanted brave, Mr Draghi? Well, meet Mr Sarrazin

By Christopher Caldwell – May 26, 2012

Christopher Caldwell 3European Central Bank president Mario Draghi urged European governments to make a “brave leap” towards greater fiscal union this week. Seldom do people who call for intellectual bravery genuinely want it. As the Bundesbank warned German taxpayers of the “considerable risks” they had already taken on by vouching for Greek debts, two men who have won adulation for their new ways of thinking about the eurozone crisis spoke in Berlin. Neither received a warm reception.

Thilo Sarrazin, the economist, Social Democrat and former Bundesbank governor, is nothing if not brave. Two years ago his profound book about the decline of Germany’s social market economy – The Abolition of Germany – became the biggest-selling non-fiction book of the past decade, largely for its bluntness about immigration, education and welfare. His new book, Europe Doesn’t Need the Euro, topped the bestseller lists as soon as it went on sale on Wednesday.

Sceptic at Large: Lifting the Lid on the European Union

In Sceptic at Large, Roger Helmer lifts the lid on how the European Union really works. A Conservative Member of the European Parliament since 1999, he offers a potent potpourri of politics and polemic, enlivened by irony, and amusing anecdotes. He provides a personal perspective of the major events during his odyssey through the corridors of Brussels over the past decade and documents his long battle against creeping European integration.

Helmer tells the tale of how Brussels is making Britain poorer, less democratic, and less free. He also conveys the tragic saga of the euro currency. Having predicted problems for the single currency since the mid 1990s, Helmer describes how it has now become a “slow-motion train wreck.”

“Helmer tells the tale of how Brussels is making Britain poorer, less democratic, and less free. He also conveys the tragic saga of the euro currency. Having predicted problems for the single currency since the mid 1990s, Helmer describes how it has now become a “slow-motion train wreck.” Our national debate is the richer for a sceptic at large. Roger puts establishments on their mettle, challenges politicians to think about their preconceptions and offers challenging views to the public.” – The Rt. Hon. John Redwood MP, from the Foreword of Sceptic at Large

The Difference Between the U.S. Constitution and EU Constitution (Lisbon Treaty) – Dan Hannan

European Parliament, Strasbourg – 17 November 2011

Speaker: Daniel Hannan MEP – Cons (ECR)

Og artikel af Hannan:

The European Project is Now Sustained by Coup

Daniel Hannan – November 17, 2011

Even the outward forms of democracy are being shed.

What we have witnessed is a coup d’état: bloodless and genteel, but a coup d’état none the less. In Athens and in Rome, elected prime ministers have been toppled in favour of Eurocrats – respectively a former Vice-President of the European Central Bank and a former European Commissioner. Both countries now have what are called ‘national governments’, though they have been put together for the sole purpose of implementing policies that would be rejected in a general election.

Europe’s hit squad

Fraser Nelson – 12 November 2011

If you thought the EU couldn’t get any less democratic, meet the Frankfurt Group

The Old Opera House in Frankfurt — once Germany’s most beautiful postwar ruin and now its most stunning recreation — has become a symbol of European rebirth. And it was here, last month, that Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy met the EU’s bureaucratic elite in what would, in another era, be described as a putsch. They had grown tired of eurozone summits, with leaders flying here and there but getting nowhere. A smaller group needed to be formed, who would wield power firmly but informally. That evening, as they gathered to hear Claudio Abbado conduct the Mozart Orchestra of Bologna, a new EU hit squad was born.

As Silvio Berlusconi has now found out, this so-called Frankfurt Group means business. Only a few months ago, it would have been unthinkable that the head of one European government would try to destabilise or depose another. Now, two EU leaders have fallen in a week. As Sarkozy knows from recent experience, to enforce regime change one need only give a helping hand to the rebels.

The myth of moderate Islam

By Patrick Sookhdeo – 30th July 2005

Patrick Sookhdeo says Islamic teaching has been aggressive for 1,400 years, and requires radical re-interpretation

The Spectator UK Banner

The funeral of British suicide bomber Shehzad Tanweer was held in absentia in his family’s ancestral village, near Lahore, Pakistan. Thousands of people attended, as they did again the following day when a qul ceremony was held for Tanweer. During qul, the Koran is recited to speed the deceased’s journey to paradise, though in Tanweer’s case this was hardly necessary. Being a shahid (martyr), he is deemed to have gone straight to paradise. The 22-year-old from Leeds, whose bomb at Aldgate station killed seven people, was hailed by the crowd as ‘a hero of Islam’.

Some in Britain cannot conceive that a suicide bomber could be a hero of Islam. Since 7/7 many have made statements to attempt to explain what seems to them a contradiction in terms. Since the violence cannot be denied, their only course is to argue that the connection with Islam is invalid. The deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Brian Paddick, said that ‘Islam and terrorists are two words that do not go together.’ His boss, the Commissioner Sir Ian Blair, asserted that there is nothing wrong with being a fundamentalist Muslim.

But surely we should give enough respect to those who voluntarily lay down their lives to accept what they themselves say about their motives. If they say they do it in the name of Islam, we must believe them. Is it not the height of illiberalism and arrogance to deny them the right to define themselves?

Europe’s Double Game in The Middle East

by Soeren Kern – March 3, 2011

Logo Hudson New York

The European Union has long claimed the moral high ground in the Middle East, but for many years it has misrepresented its post-modern “soft power” foreign policy as a morally superior alternative to the United States in the Arab world.

The popular uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East are exposing the hypocritical ambiguities that underpin European foreign policy. At the same time they are drawing attention to Europe’s own democratic deficit.

As Egyptians were rising up against their government in early February, for instance, the European Union’s “Foreign Minister,” Baroness Catherine Ashton, penned an article in the London-based Guardian newspaper saying she wanted to see “deep democracy” take root in Egypt. Ashton warned that Egypt should not become a “surface democracy” with votes and elections, but that it should be a “deep democracy,” which involves “respect for the rule of law, freedom of speech, an independent judiciary and impartial administration.” Ashton also said the Egyptian government “must respond to the wishes of their people.”

So now it’s cards on the table, the big lie exposed, all pretence over. After decades during which the peoples of Europe were told that the EU posed no threat to the sovereignty of member states, the European Council President Herman von Rompuy has finally stated that the real purpose of the EU is nothing less than to destroy the nation state. The Mail reports:

“The age of the nation state is over and the idea that countries can stand alone is an ‘illusion’ and a ‘lie’, the EU president believes. In one of the most open proclamations of the goal of a European superstate since the heyday of Jacques Delors, Herman Van Rompuy went on to denounce Eurosceptism as the greatest threat to peace.”

Bruce Bawer om europæernes frihedsrettigheder

Wilders Is Right: Europe Needs a First Amendment

The trial of Dutch MP Geert Wilders wasn’t really about him or about Islam. It was about individual liberty.

October 17, 2010 – by Bruce Bawer

One of the most bizarre aspects of being an American in Western Europe — at least if you’re an American who has opinions and is used to expressing them freely — is getting accustomed to the fact that there’s no First Amendment over here. Some of us grew up thinking of Western Europe as part of the “Free World.” But how free is a country if it doesn’t recognize freedom of speech as a fundamental right?

I’m old enough to remember the landmark case in the late 1970s when a group of Nazis wanted to hold a march in the largely Jewish Chicago suburb of Skokie. The story made headlines nationwide and sparked intense debate. The ACLU took the case; the Supreme Court ruled for the Nazis. But it was not a victory for Nazism — it was a victory for the Constitution. It affirmed that the First Amendment really means what it says, and that the United States really is the land of the free.

Tyrkiet – And still the West sleeps…

Who lost Turkey?

Caroline Glick

By Caroline Glick  - September 21, 2010

You have to hand it to Turkey’s Islamist leaders. They sure know how to get their way. In the seven years since they first took power, the Islamist AKP party has successfully transformed Turkey from a staunch ally of the US and Israel and a member of NATO into a staunch ally of Iran and a member of NATO.

And that’s not all. Turkey’s Islamist leaders have used the Western language of democracy and freedom not only to abandon the West. They have used that language to destroy the foundations of Turkey’s Western-style secular democracy and transform the governing system of NATO’s sole Muslim member into a hybrid of Putinist autocracy and Iranian theocracy.

On September 12, the AKP took an enormous step toward consolidating its achievements and expanding its power. The Islamist regime won a national plebiscite on constitutional amendments that remove the remaining obstacles to its absolute power.

Aversion to Democracy in the European Union

The leader of the German Free Democrats once said, “If the European Union applied for membership of the EU, it would be turned down. The reason? Not enough democracy.”

This was a comment that Frederick Forsyth picked up on.

Perhaps best-known for his thrillers, such as the international bestseller “Day of the Jackal”, which he published in 1971, Mr Forsyth has in recent years established himself as a political commentator, and as a “Eurosceptic” has written both books and articles on the short-comings of the EU.

He is also a well established political commentator, having appeared as a panellist on Question Time and The One Show, and in print in the Daily Express.

His talk, introduced by a member of the Tax Payers Alliance, will focus on this, the “quite deliberate abrogation of democracy”.
