Bernard Lewis’ new book, Notes on a Century: Reflections of a Middle East Historian, written at the age of 95, is essentially his autobiography. Since he is, above all, a scholar, much of his life has been thinking and writing. Not surprisingly, the book recounts the gestational process of a number of his major works. Lewis is the author of more than 30 books. This leads him to wonder, in 100 years, which of his works will be remembered? I venture to say that it will not be this one, nor does he mean it to be. This is a breezy, episodic, conversational book of reflections, aperçus, anecdotes, and some very sharp observations. It is what is called a “good read.” It is not particularly profound or deep. It only glancingly refers to ideas that Lewis has developed at greater length in his earlier works. He refers to them rather than repeating them, and places their development in the context of his long life.
Therefore, this is not the Lewis book with which you should begin. First, become conversant with his deep scholarship in the history of the Middle East. Then, you will no doubt be driven to know more about the man himself, and that you can find entertainingly set forth in Notes on a Century.

“Islamophobia is prevalent above all among Muslims”
Felix Strüning – 9. April 2012
He is to a certain extent the inventor of the Islam-critical fact book and probably the most provocative opponent of political Islam in Germany: Udo Ulfkotte explains in a Citizen Times interview why Islamophobia is prevalent above all among Muslims; German Islam critics are changing nothing; what Mohammed and Hitler had in common; and what he would urgently advise Interior Minister Friedrich (German original, tanks for translation by JLH at Gates of Vienna).
Citizen Times: Mr. Ulfkotte, almost exactly nine years ago your first book on Islam, The War in our Cities, appeared. How has the debate about Islam in Germany developed since then?
Udo Ulfkotte: We have given up more and more since then. Let us leave my books and look at Thilo Sarrazin. Then we just have to accept the fact: Even when an author sells far more than a million books on the subject, is quoted in all the media — absolutely nothing changes. We are today where we were before Sarrazin. No. We are getting worse and worse in the realm of political correctness. The debate on Islam is not developing. It is repeatedly choked off. Quite slowly we are choking ourselves by doing that.
When the Qaeda leader Abu Zubaydah was captured, six months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, C.I.A. lawyers were asked to approve a battery of tough interrogation techniques hastily thrown together. They did not much fear that posterity would think them ruthless. On the contrary, the C.I.A.’s No. 2 attorney worried that “with all the restrictions and precautions and scrutiny by lawyers and doctors and psychologists,” they’d look like a bunch of wimps.
It is not as a bunch of wimps that history has remembered George W. Bush’s antiterrorist team. The Harvard law professor Jack Goldsmith, who worked briefly in the Bush administration’s Office of Legal Counsel, has himself been critical of his former colleagues’ “unilateralism” and their preference for power over persuasion. But he has also been an eloquent dissenter from the view that the Bush administration simply ran roughshod over the Constitution.[...]

Why Do They Hate Us?
The real war on women is in the Middle East.
By Mona Eltahawy | May/June 2012
In “Distant View of a Minaret,” the late and much-neglected Egyptian writer Alifa Rifaat begins her short story with a woman so unmoved by sex with her husband that as he focuses solely on his pleasure, she notices a spider web she must sweep off the ceiling and has time to ruminate on her husband’s repeated refusal to prolong intercourse until she too climaxes, “as though purposely to deprive her.” Just as her husband denies her an orgasm, the call to prayer interrupts his, and the man leaves. After washing up, she loses herself in prayer — so much more satisfying that she can’t wait until the next prayer — and looks out onto the street from her balcony. She interrupts her reverie to make coffee dutifully for her husband to drink after his nap. Taking it to their bedroom to pour it in front of him as he prefers, she notices he is dead. She instructs their son to go and get a doctor. “She returned to the living room and poured out the coffee for herself. She was surprised at how calm she was,” Rifaat writes.

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf:
As Islam has spread throughout the world, it has combined religion with native cultural practices. Many centuries later, separating the religion from the underlying culture has become difficult. That’s why Islam as practiced in Egypt differs from, say, Islam as practiced in Malaysia.
Mona Eltahawy describes cultural practices in Egypt and the Middle East that predate Islam yet have been embraced by many people now as part of Islam. The practice of genital mutilation of women, for example, is found only in Africa. If it were part of Islam, it would be practiced by Muslims all over the world.

Muslim Journalist Challenges Sharia, Gets Accused of ‘Hate’
by Robert Spencer – May 31, 2012
Mona Eltahawy receives the typical treatment given to defenders of Muslim women.
Mona Eltahawy’s piece in the May/June issue of Foreign Policy criticized a series of practices that are justified in Islamic law, including child marriage, wife-beating, and female genital mutilation. Counter-jihadist activists and writers have been calling attention to these human rights abuses for years, but Eltahawy’s piece was singular in that she is a Muslim journalist.

Guest: Geert Wilders, author of, “Marked for Death: Islam’s War Against the West and Me.”
Premier Mark Rutte’s reputation as the good-humoured gentleman has been dented now that it has emerged that he made a fierce attack behind the scenes on Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders.
Rutte was confronted on TV programme Pauw&Witteman last Friday evening with a rumour that he threatened to “decimate” the PVV if Wilders did not sign up to an accord for 14 billion euros in budget cutbacks for 2013. Rutte confirmed that he “may have said something like this”.
Wilders said Saturday evening on TV programme EenVandaag that Rutte’s words had been even stronger. According to the PVV leader, the premier told him “I will break that little party of yours down to the last seat.”
“I cannot explain to anyone that these parties signed a blank cheque of 40 billion euros for Greece and perhaps for Spain, Italy and other countries while we demand 12 billion euros from the Dutch citizens,” Wilders told TV station RTL 7.
Opdatering 5. juni 2012: Wilders tabte retssagen, skriver flere kilder blandt andre The Irish Times og Expatica. Wilders overvejer at anke sagen, skriver Reuters.
“The Turkish president described Mr Wilders as an Islamophobe in an interview with popular daily De Telegraaf. He said the Freedom Party leader expressed extremist views that fostered radicalism.”
“Islamist Gul, who persecutes the Christians, attacks the Kurds and is in friendly relations with Hamas, complaint of intolerance. Typical Turkish humor.”
“Turkey has a number of shortcomings – imprisonment of journalists covering criticism, denial of Armenian Genocide, pressure against national minorities. However, due to Kemal Ataturk’s advanced visions Turkey managed to become a strategic ally of the West and shared military and diplomatic cooperation with Israel for so long.”
Apparently Christopher Dickey, who for many years had a photograph of Yasir Arafat hanging on his Newsweek office wall in Paris, thinks that “someone could get hurt” if Geert Wilders continues to say what, for the well-informed, is obvious: that what is in Qur’an, Hadith, and Sira, if taken to heart, makes every Believer a menace, in posse and, whenever the spirit moves him, in esse, to all non-Muslims. Apparently Christopher Dickey has not noticed the 2.5 million black African Christians killed in the southern Sudan by northern Muslims, never noticed what happened to the Igbo and other Christians before, during, and after the Biafra War, has not noticed what has been happening to Christians in Iraq and in Pakistan and in Indonesia [...]

You wanted brave, Mr Draghi? Well, meet Mr Sarrazin
By Christopher Caldwell – May 26, 2012
European Central Bank president Mario Draghi urged European governments to make a “brave leap” towards greater fiscal union this week. Seldom do people who call for intellectual bravery genuinely want it. As the Bundesbank warned German taxpayers of the “considerable risks” they had already taken on by vouching for Greek debts, two men who have won adulation for their new ways of thinking about the eurozone crisis spoke in Berlin. Neither received a warm reception.
Thilo Sarrazin, the economist, Social Democrat and former Bundesbank governor, is nothing if not brave. Two years ago his profound book about the decline of Germany’s social market economy – The Abolition of Germany – became the biggest-selling non-fiction book of the past decade, largely for its bluntness about immigration, education and welfare. His new book, Europe Doesn’t Need the Euro, topped the bestseller lists as soon as it went on sale on Wednesday.

Fighting the Ideological War: Lessons from the United Kingdom and the United States
The Obama Administration has had a longstanding policy of trying to remove all reference to Islam and Islamic ideology from discussions about terrorism. Widespread changes have been instituted in counterterrorism training with the result that many U.S. experts on radical Islam have now been sidelined and are restricted in what they may or may not teach about Islamic ideology.
For some time the British government pursued a similar policy. However, seeing its shortcomings, they recently changed course. Recognizing the centrality of Islamist ideology to domestic radicalization, the United Kingdom re-launched the “Prevent” strategy. This strategy not only examines Islamist ideology but also directly confronts it. As the UK government’s June 2011 framework document states, “The Prevent program we inherited from the last Government was flawed… It failed to confront the extremist ideology at the heart of the threat we face.” So as the British government is moving deeper into the study and confrontation of Islamist ideology, the United States is moving in the very opposite direction.
Dr. Patrick Sookhdeo has worked closely with the United Kingdom’s police force as well as with U.S. law enforcement and military authorities. Join us as he discusses this critical component of U.S. counter-terrorism strategy and shares his insights into these two different strategies.

Geert Wilders, author of the book “Marked For Death” talks with Stossel about “free speech” and how it’s fine for everyone just as long as no one disagrees. Unfortunately for Geert Wilders he lives in the european socilist state where such things as speaking the truth can get you thrown in jail or in his case you’ll get a bounty on your head as well as charged with a crime. This is the sort of thing that liberals want for America, it’s already the case that people like Al Sharpton can call whites ANYTHING he feels like but for a white person to do the same to blacks would be met with charges of racisim and worse.

At 96, Historian Lewis Reflects On ‘A Century’
May 15, 2012
Over his long academic career, Bernard Lewis has arguably become the world’s greatest historian of the Middle East. Now, at 96, Lewis turns his attention inward in a memoir that looks back on his life, work and legacy.
The linguist and scholar’s career began before World War II, and in a new memoir he covers more than a few sensitive areas, from race and slavery in Islam, to the clash of civilizations and his long argument with scholar Edward Said, to his role as an adviser to former Vice President Dick Cheney.
NPR’s Neal Conan talks with Lewis about his new book, Notes on a Century.

When I was asked to write a foreword to Geert Wilders’ new book, my first reaction, to be honest, was to pass. Mr. Wilders lives under 24/7 armed guard because significant numbers of motivated people wish to kill him, and it seemed to me, as someone who’s attracted more than enough homicidal attention over the years, that sharing space in these pages was likely to lead to an uptick in my own death threats. Who needs it? Why not just plead too crowded a schedule and suggest the author try elsewhere? I would imagine Geert Wilders gets quite a lot of this.
And then I took a stroll in the woods, and felt vaguely ashamed at the ease with which I was willing to hand a small victory to his enemies. After I saw off the Islamic enforcers in my own country, their frontman crowed to The Canadian Arab News that, even though the Canadian Islamic Congress had struck out in three different jurisdictions in their attempt to criminalize my writing about Islam, the lawsuits had cost my magazine (he boasted) two million bucks, and thereby “attained our strategic objective — to increase the cost of publishing anti-Islamic material.” In the Netherlands, Mr. Wilders’ foes, whether murderous jihadists or the multicultural establishment, share the same “strategic objective” — to increase the cost of associating with him beyond that which most people are willing to bear. It is not easy to be Geert Wilders. He has spent almost a decade in a strange, claustrophobic, transient, and tenuous existence little different from kidnap victims or, in his words, a political prisoner. He is under round-the-clock guard because of explicit threats to murder him by Muslim extremists.
Et klart mønster tegner sig. Konservative medier får etiketten ‘højreorienteret’, hvorimod venstreorienterede får ‘uafhængig’, ‘velanset’ eller ‘troværdig’.
