It is time to banish wishful thinking about Islamism

By Ayaan Hirsi Ali – February 8, 2012

A year ago many western commentators were celebrating an Arab spring. The internet generation personified by Wael Ghonim, the Google marketing executive, would take over power from military dictators and absolute monarchs in democratic elections. Those of us who warned that political Islam would be the principal beneficiary of elections in north Africa and the Middle East were dismissed as scaremongers.

Ever since 9/11, opinions in the west have been sharply divided on the popularity and legitimacy of political Islam. A minority – and I am one of them – argued that Islamism as a political doctrine was held by the mainstream in most of the House of Islam and particularly among Arabs; that violence was inherent in Islamist theory; and that if Islamists won state power they would not deliver prosperity.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: A Secular Spring or an Islamist Winter? – April 14, 2012

This is a brilliant speech: Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a human rights activist especially for the rights of women under Islam. She is utterly fearless in her condemnation of repressive regimes and religions where the rights of dissidents, male or female are oppressed.

She was born in Somalia, the daughter of a political opponent of the ruling dictator. Raised as a Muslim, she attempted to be a devout believer but fled an arranged marriage to what initially was a sanctuary in Holland. She became a Dutch citizen and was elected to parliament from 2003 to 2006.

She left the Netherlands after the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh who was making a film about the treatment of women under Islam. Ayaan had scripted the film and she was targeted as being the next to die.

Ayaan now lives and works in Washington DC and her current work is researching the relationship between Islam and the West. She is very interesting and critical about the failure of Western liberals to defend free speech and the rights of women under Islam.

She speaks here at the 2012 Global Atheist Convention in Melbourne in a talk entitled “The Arab protests of 2011: A secular Spring or an Islamist Winter?”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali on Protecting Women From Militant Islam

Even in democratic nations, mothers and daughters are held back from basic freedoms

By Kathleen Burke – May 15, 2012

In the United States, author and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali continues her work on behalf of Muslim women and girls with her eponymous Ayaan Hirsi Ali Foundation.  She spoke with Smithsonian about the Foundation’s mission and its ongoing efforts to protect Muslim women in this country from oppression and violence.

Could you discuss the work of the AHA Foundation, the essence of your goal and what your future plans are?

The foundation’s mission is to protect women from violence justified in the name of culture and religion. By religion, first and foremost I mean militant Islam. The violence that these women encounter is the result of their desire to be free. The freedom they seek is to pursue education; freedom to work, and most importantly, freedom to own their own bodies. To be mistresses of their own bodies, they want to choose their own mate, to choose how many children they have. In some Muslim households, this is not possible.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: from Muslim ‘infidel’ to mother

By Sunny Dhillon – Mar. 16, 2012

Logo The Globe and Mail

When she was a devout Muslim, Ayaan Hirsi Ali supported a fatwa against author Salman Rushdie. When she later became an atheist, death threats were again made – this time, against her. To say it has been an improbable road from Mogadishu to D.C. for the intellectual, author, activist and former politician would be an understatement. When her family arranged a marriage for her, Ms. Hirsi Ali fled to the Netherlands and within a decade was a member of Parliament. After her staunch criticism of Islam in a film, her colleague Theo van Gogh was murdered and she was forced into hiding. Five years ago, she published her autobiography, Infidel, with a foreword by fellow atheist Christopher Hitchens. Today she works for a Washington-based think tank, and at 42, Ms. Hirsi Ali has also embarked on a new challenge: motherhood. She and her husband, noted historian and author Niall Ferguson, welcomed their son, Thomas, in December. Ms. Hirsi Ali spoke with The Globe and Mail recently in Vancouver about her life under death threats, the Shafia honour killings, and how she plans to raise her child.

The Global War on Christians in the Muslim World

Ayaan Hirsi Ali – Feb 6, 2012

From one end of the muslim world to the other, Christians are being murdered for their faith.

Logo The Daily BeastWe hear so often about Muslims as victims of abuse in the West and combatants in the Arab Spring’s fight against tyranny. But, in fact, a wholly different kind of war is underway—an unrecognized battle costing thousands of lives. Christians are being killed in the Islamic world because of their religion. It is a rising genocide that ought to provoke global alarm.

The portrayal of Muslims as victims or heroes is at best partially accurate. In recent years the violent oppression of Christian minorities has become the norm in Muslim-majority nations stretching from West Africa and the Middle East to South Asia and Oceania. In some countries it is governments and their agents that have burned churches and imprisoned parishioners. In others, rebel groups and vigilantes have taken matters into their own hands, murdering Christians and driving them from regions where their roots go back centuries.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali Breaks the Media Silence on Anti-Christian Persecution

By Nina Shea – February 7, 2012

Best-selling author, film director, women’s-rights advocate, former Dutch parliamentarian, Islamist death-threat survivor, refugee from a Somalian forced marriage, and a fierce champion of individual freedoms — that of others as well as her own — Ayaan Hirsi Ali has demonstrated her courage once more. In the cover story she penned for the current issue of Newsweek, entitled “The War on Christians,” which is excerpted in The Daily Beast, Hirsi Ali gives a tour d’horizon of the most politically incorrect subject of all human-rights reporting: the ongoing religious persecution of Christians in the Muslim world. It makes heartbreaking reading.

She criticizes the media for giving short shrift to this development, favoring instead the narrative that Muslims are the victims of religious persecution by the West. She writes:

How to Honour the Victims of “Honour Killings”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali – January 31, 2012

For the premeditated murder of teenage daughters Zainab, Sahar, and Geeti, and first wife Rona, Mohammad, Tooba Yahya, and Hamed Shafia will now begin serving life sentences.

The details of this quadruple homicide have been well documented. But Justice Robert Maranger, who presided over the 12-week trial, gave perhaps the best summary of the case as he imposed the sentence on the defendants:

Ayaan Hirsi Ali biographer flouts facts

By Diana West | January 28, 2012

Logo Washington Examiner Medium

No doubt Deborah Scroggins believes she just published a dual biography of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, former Dutch parliament member, and Aafia Siddiqui, jailed al Qaeda terrorist, and so she did. What may surprise the biographer, however, is that she also provided a third study: post-9/11 moral equivalence.

This begins with Scroggins’ outre decision to pair a peaceable writer and politician with a violent al Qaeda scientist who married Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s nephew and co-plotter after 9/11 as the “Wanted Women” of the book’s title.

The Marxist Mission to Destroy Ayaan Hirsi Ali

A new book endorsed by the New York Times compares the Dutch feminist with convicted terrorist “Lady Al Qaeda” Aafiya Siddiqui.

by Phyllis Chesler – January 26, 2012

The feminism I once championed — and still do — was first taken over by Marxists and subsequently “Stalinized.” It was then conquered again by Islamists and “Palestinianized.” I and a handful of others maintained honorable minority positions on a host of issues. In time, women no longer mattered as much to many feminists — at least, not as much as Edward Said’s Arab men of color did. The Arab men were more fashionable victims who had not only been formerly “colonized” but who, to this day, are still being “occupied” by allegedly “apartheid”–intentioned Jews.

While most of my generation of feminists have long ago retired, died, fallen ill, or have continued to rest visibly on their own earliest laurels, I continue to champion universalist values and to resist the death-grip of multicultural relativism.

Will Latest “Muhammad” Firebombing Cause More Self-Censorship?

Ayaan Hirsi Ali – November 7, 2011

Logo Huffington PostThe Paris offices of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo were firebombed Wednesday, the same day the magazine released an issue caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad on its cover. The new issue, which previewed online on Monday, names the Prophet as its “guest editor” in a mock tribute to the Islamist Ennahda Party’s victory in the Tunisian elections and the inclusion of Sharia law in Libya’s new constitution. The cover drawing depicts Muhammad promising “100 lashes if you don’t die from laughter.”

Although no group has claimed responsibility, there are strong indications that the firebombing was the work of Islamic extremists. The magazine’s website was hacked Tuesday night, with the welcome page replaced by an image of Mecca and the words: “No god but Allah.”

Dhimmitude and Cowardice At Time Magazine

By Bruce Bawer – November 7, 2011

November 2 marked the seventh anniversary of Theo van Gogh’s murder by a pious young Muslim on an Amsterdam street. One of the memorable aspects of that history-making slaughter was the largely despicable way in which the media in the Netherlands and around the world covered it. Many of the accounts of van Gogh’s butchering, which was motivated by his short film, Submission, about the plight of women under Islam, hinted — or even stated directly — that van Gogh had been asking for it. He had gone too far. He had insulted Islam and offended Muslims. What, after all, asked one editorial after another, had he expected when he made Submission? He should have known what he was getting into. Freedom of expression was one thing, but giving needless offense to a billion and a half members of a religion? That was just plain over the line. Not sensible. Not prudent. Yes, van Gogh was — in his own country, at least — a famous contrarian, an iconoclast, accustomed to going after sacred cows across the political and cultural spectrum with all the gusto and irreverence he could muster. But to make a film that he had to know would outrage devout Muslims and put him in danger of being killed? Well, that was just stupid. Almost parenthetically, many of the editorialists acknowledged that there was no excuse for the murder. But their hearts weren’t in this rote qualification. They were out to condemn not the murderer, but the victim, who, in their eyes, has brought it all on himself.

A question of loyalty

Kevin Libin – Oct 21, 2011

Calgary — The concept of citizenship is a curious one for a nomad — at least that’s the word Ayaan Hirsi Ali used to describe herself in the title of her latest memoir. Ms. Hirsi Ali spent her childhood shuttling between Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Kenya, before fleeing an arranged marriage that would have brought her to Canada, settling instead in the Netherlands. There, after attending university and becoming a member of parliament—speaking out against radical Islam and its threat to Dutch culture—she stepped down from politics and nearly had her citizenship revoked (she had used false information on her refugee claim 14 years earlier). After appealing to France to grant her citizenship, she ended up in 2006 in the United States.

Perhaps a life spent without a permanent link to any one country, though, has at least given Ms. Hirsi Ali a perspective rare among prominent Western intellectuals. Arriving in Holland for the first time, she recalls first encountering the expectation that she would curb her ethnic loyalties in favour of a nation state, and finding it nothing less than bizarre.

A Call to Ban the Full-Face Veil in the U.S. and in Israel

Nancy Kobrin, PhD, Joan Lachkar, PhD – October 3, 2011

As psychoanalysts, we are addressing the psychological implications of wearing a full-face veil. It is well known from psychological research and infant and human developmental psychology that contact with the mother’s face is of crucial importance. The importance of eye contact with the mother’s gaze is substantiated by the research and writings of such famous researchers as Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, Margaret Mahler, Otto Kernberg, Mary Ainsworth, Beatrice Beebe, John Bowlby, Daniel Stern and others who have made major contributions to the study of attachment disorders. This is further confirmed by Ayaan Hirsi Ali that the full-face veil is terrifying to children. Babies and children are in constant need to be able to read the nonverbal, covert body language messages of their mother’s face. It goes without saying that the kind of message that the full-face veil communicates to the infant is that the mother’s gaze is cut off and therefore uninvolved or concerned with the infant’s well being. To the public too the mother has been erased, so to speak, from being part of civil society, an individual demanding and deserving recognition and respect. The full-face veil communicates hatred and terror of the female. This is not a good message to communicate to a baby.

I have never seen a bride walk up the aisle faster than Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She said afterwards that it was nerves propelling her. But it was more obviously happiness. The memorial chapel at Harvard was the setting for a crowd of us to gather, on September 10, to witness her marriage to Niall Ferguson. With stock markets tumbling and newspapers predicting terrorist attacks, the union of these two equal and unequalled people, united us in joy. And it reminded me, as did the funeral of a friend a few weeks earlier, that even for atheists when it comes to life’s major milestones the Church still does it best.

Drinking and dancing followed in Boston. I joined what I thought was the receiving line for the bride and groom and lingered a while before discovering it was a greeting line for Henry Kissinger. The post-dinner dance floor would have been the Guardian’s worst nightmare.

It’s Time Lily-Livered Europe Stood Up to Muslim Bigots

By Ayaan Hirsi Ali | May 5, 2009

In 2006, I had a debate with Tariq Ramadan, the author of Western Muslims and the Future of Islam. In the hypothetical event of a war between Egypt and Switzerland, for which community would he be prepared to die, I asked him. Mr Ramadan has dual citizenship. He’s an Egyptian by birth and a Swiss by naturalisation. His response was one of rage on different levels. Above all I think he was outraged that one should ask such a question. He refused to answer.

Mr Ramadan, like many other Muslims, may have two or more citizenships. From all that he expresses both in person and on paper, it is clear that his loyalty, above all, is to Islam. I do not doubt that he would die for Islam, like most Muslims, and that’s his prerogative. But what European countries have done is give citizenship to individuals who feel no obligation to share in their societies for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer and in the event of a catastrophe, sacrifice themselves.

Muslim Women in Europe

This event occurred on September 26th, 2005, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs, Georgetown University.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Dutch MP, and author of the controversial film Submission, addressed the Georgetown community on the challenges facing Muslim women in Europe. Hirsi Ali, a Member of the Dutch Parliament, is outspoken on issues such as the role of women, immigration, development, and democracy. In her talk, Hirsi Ali combined political and policy analysis with personal anecdote. She related how she avoided an arranged marriage by deplaning in Germany when her Canada-bound airplane stopped to pick up more passengers. From Germany, she took a train to Holland where she set down roots, became educated, and emerged as a figurehead for human rights issues. Today the Netherlands and all of Europe face unprecedented challenges stemming from the growth of cultural and religious pluralism in largely secular societies. The event was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center and BMW Center for German and European Studies.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a former Member of Parliament from the Netherlands, as well as a prominent critic of Islam and advocate for its reform. She is outspoken on issues such as the role of women, immigration, development, and democracy. She is author of the controversial film “Submission,” directed by Theo Van Gogh, as well as the books Nomad (2010), Infidel (2007), and The Caged Virgin (2006), a collection of essays. Born in Somalia, she fled an arranged marriage and sought political asylum in the Netherlands, where she earned a political science degree and served in parliament for three years. Ali also worked as a researcher for the Wiardi Beckman Foundation and as an interpreter and adviser for the Office of Intercultural Communication in Leiden. She is now a permanent resident of the United States.
