Iranian regime plays chess, we play checkers

October 19, 2011 | By Kenneth Timmerman

We are so unprepared to defeat Iran’s clerical rulers and their Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC) hand-maidens. Every time we think we’ve caught them red-handed, as with the latest terror plot in Washington, D.C., they invent a new way to wriggle out of it.

Their latest gambit, which I’ve been expecting from the get-go, is to offer up the IRGC intermediary in the plot, claiming he was an infiltrator from the MEK, the Marxist Islamist group that was once part of the Khomeinist regime, but had a falling out with them over power-sharing 30 years ago.

Iran’s Global Strategic Goal is Rationally MAD

Walid Phares – October 19th 2011

My first book, The Iranian Islamic Revolution, published way back in 1986, dealt with the historicity of the 1979 Khomeinist Revolution in Iran. In it, I exposed the Khomeinist regime’s long-term ambitions and revisionist account of events that led to the Shah’s overthrow and Ayatollah Khomeini’s ascent to power in the alleged Islamic “Republic” of Iran. From my observatory in Beirut where Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRG) were growing into a force to be reckoned with in the region and beyond, I absorbed and digested the thinking and logic of Tehran’s strategists. Boiled down, that strategy involved sending as many mixed signals in as many directions as possible so as to confuse opposing forces and make them tentative. This would allow the Khomeinists to pursue their global ambitions with minimal opposition.

Mansour Ahani said he was fleeing religious and political persecution in Iran when he arrived at Vancouver airport from Singapore in October 1991.

“I am dead if I return,” he wrote in his refugee claim.

But after spending months following Ahani, Canadian intelligence officers came to a startling conclusion: He was a highly trained Iranian government assassin whose handlers were planning an attack on the British author Salman Rushdie.

Interview / Salman Rushdie is not afraid

He thinks ‘Game of Thrones’ is dumb, bemoans the lack of good modern novels and believes terrorism is dying out; over 20 years after fleeing for his life from an Iranian-issued fatwa, novelist Salman Rushdie is still unafraid to speak his mind.

By Gidi Weitz – October 14, 2011

New York. One fine evening a few weeks ago, the writer Salman Rushdie walked, unattended by bodyguards, to the site of the 9/11 memorial. “It was very strange to walk into that space after ten years,” the 64-year-old recalls as we sit in the offices of the Wiley literary agency in the center of New York. “I remember post-9/11, many journalists from all over saying to me, ‘Ah, now we understand what happened to you.’ And I responded, ‘Really? That’s what it took for you to take note?!’ But in some way that was the moment at which these things, like the attack on ‘The Satanic Verses’ or the persecution of other people in different places, suddenly became a big thing.”

Q.You’ve agreed to read an excerpt of a new book about the history of the Taj hotel in Mumbai. What connection do you have to the hotel?

A.I’m a Bombay boy, so my connection to the Taj is life long. I went there as a boy with my parents, and as an adult I’ve taken my own family to stay there a number of times, and in general have always made a beeline for it when in Bombay.

Amb. Roger Noriega: The Mounting Hezbollah Threat in Latin America

Hezbollah is expanding their network to our hemisphere and recently planned an attack in the heart of our nation’s capital. The terrorist organization is getting much closer to U.S. soil and this is a great threat to our nation that must be recognized and addressed.

The Mounting Hezbollah Threat in Latin America

By Roger F. Noriega, José R. Cárdenas | October 2011

Over the last several years Hezbollah and its patrons in Iran have greatly expanded their operations in Latin America to the detriment of inter-American security and US strategic interests. Today, Hezbollah is using the Western Hemisphere as a staging ground, fundraising center, and operational base to wage asymmetric warfare against the United States. Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez and other anti-American governments in the region have facilitated this expansion by rolling out the welcome mats for Hezbollah and Iran. US policymakers must increase their attention to this problem, expand their assets in the region, and develop a comprehensive strategy to combat this threat in a sustained and meaningful way.

Key points in this Outlook:

  • To ward off its international isolation and undermine US influence in the region, Iran, with its Hezbollah proxy in tow, has made a major diplomatic and economic push into the Western Hemisphere.
  • Hugo Chávez in Venezuela and other radical anti-American populists have made common cause with Iran and Hezbollah in waging asymmetric warfare against the United States.
Hezbollah’s criminality in the region has multiplied as it
  • has established deeper relations with transnational criminal organizations.
  • Evidence indicates Hezbollah is sharing its terrorist experiences and techniques with Mexican drug cartels along the US border.

Quds and Zetas

By Thomas Donnelly | October 12, 2011

The revelation that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps and its Quds Force had plotted to kill Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States–by blowing him up as he dined at a Washington restaurant–is a stark reminder of the nature of the Tehran regime and its ambitions. But perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the story is that Iran’s thugs are developing a strategic partnership with Mexico’s most violent thugs: Los Zetas may only be the second-largest drug cartel in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s rankings, but they’re probably the most lethal. The gang is said to have formed around a platoon’s worth of deserters from Mexico’s special operations forces, and became the elite troops of another Mexican drug organization, the Gulf Cartel. The leader of that cartel got himself arrested, and the Zetas moved out on their own.

Quds Force in Our Own Backyard

W. Thomas Smith – October 14, 2011

[Following is part of a briefing delivered yesterday, adapted for Family Security Matters]

As new information about the alleged Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in the U.S. continues to surface, keep in mind many of the seemingly unrelated particulars many counterterrorism analysts and experts have pointed to for years – and politicians have far too-often dismissed as unimportant fear-mongering – regarding the Iranian-Hizballah threat in the Western Hemisphere, particularly as regards the threat of the Iranian Quds Force (tasked with directing this latest plot) and Hizballah terrorists operating in central and South America.

Politics aside, let’s examine the facts and connect a few of the dots.

FIRST, what is the Quds Force?

De to landes ambassader i Buenos Aires, Argentina skulle have samme fine, islamiske behandling.

  • Den absolut vigtigste årsag er hævn for WikiLeaks. Her i citatet omtales præcis den saudiarabiske ambassadør, der skulle myrdes – fra The Christian Science Monitor den 29. november 2010:

according to a cable recording a conversation between Saudi Ambassador to the US Adel al-Jubair and a US diplomat, Saudi King Abdullah repeatedly urged the US to attack Iran. “He told you to cut the head off the snake,” al-Jubair told the diplomat – the snake, of course, being Iran.

Sikkert ingenting.

Senior American officials themselves were struggling to explain why the Quds Force, an elite international operations unit within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, would orchestrate such a risky attack in so amateurish a manner.

Det skriver The New York Times. Ydre fjender – sunnierne i Saudi Arabien og israelerne vil have styret bombet.

Iran’s Provocative Rhetoric

By Ali Alfoneh | October 12, 2011

In the hours following the United States Department of Justice press release on the foiled terror plot “directed by elements of the Iranian government to murder the Saudi Ambassador to the United States,” the Islamic Republic officials have energetically dismissed the allegations against Iran.

Hassan Qashqavi, deputy foreign minister, stressed: “Despite some conflicting points of view, relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and [Saudi] Arabia are based on mutual respect between Muslims and such deeds [the allegations against Iran], which are designed to instigate conflict in the region, will not have the slightest impact.” Ramin Mehmanparast, Foreign Ministry spokesman, called the allegations “a ridiculous theater” directed by “the American-Zionist axis;” while Ala al-Din Boroujerdi, parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy chairman, bizarrely said the United States allegations serve the purpose of “diverting public attention from the revolt against Wall Street.”

Saudi Arabia and Iran: Competing Autocracies

by Ali Alyami – October 11, 2011

Despite their public pronouncements and overt disputes, the Saudi and Iranian autocracies share the same objectives: to prevent democracy from taking root in their and other Arab and Muslim countries.

Their overriding goal is to severely undermine the Western democratic influence, especially that of the US, in Arab and Muslim countries. They consider democracy a mortal threat to their oppressive rule.

The Saudi and Iranian regimes compete over the hearts and minds of oppressed Muslims, including their own, and use whatever they can to outdo each other by painting themselves as the protectors of Islam and Muslims worldwide.

The religious roots of Iran’s rivalry with Saudi Arabia

By Vali Nasr – October 13, 2011

The furor over the alleged Iranian plot to kill Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States has made one point clear: The most important strategic divide in the Middle East today is between Iran and Saudi Arabia. At issue is religion and power. Iran’s clerical rulers see their regime as the product of the first and only Islamic revolution, and the true vanguard of Islamic politics in the Muslim world.

For it’s part, Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam; the Saudi king carries the title of the keeper of the two holiest shrines in Islam (those of Mecca and Medina). The Saudi monarchy was also born of a puritanical religious revolt and continues to see itself as the true standard bearer of Islam.

Iran in Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay

by Anna Mahjar-Barducci – August 24, 2011

South AmericaWhile the world is busy with the economic crisis and the uprising in the Middle East, Iran silently continues its penetration into Latin America. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Ali Ahani, recently visited Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay with the goal to further strengthen political and economic relations. The visit of Ahani to Uruguay comes in the aftermath of the Iranian Ambassador’s declarations denying the Holocaust — causing outrage throughout the Jewish communities in Latin America.

Brazilian President follows Lula’s steps on Iran
On August 10th, CNN television reported that representatives from Brazil and Iran agreed to enhance relations between the two countries, “a signal that Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will follow the example of her predecessor and demonstrate Brazil’s diplomatic independence by dealing with a nation under scrutiny for its nuclear program.” Former Brazilian President Lula da Silva’s government had backed Iran’s nuclear program in the U.N. Security Council, and had voted against sanctions. Further, under Lula’s presidency, Brazil, along with Turkey, agreed on a deal to swap nuclear fuel to help Tehran end its stand-off with the West over the controversial atomic program. The deal, however, became overshadowed by U.S. sanctions.

In June, Lebanon’s new prime minister, Najib Mikati, announced the formation of a government dominated by members and allies of the Shiite terrorist organization Hezbollah. The creation of the new government has made Hezbollah the most dominant political force in Lebanon just six years after the “Cedar Revolution,” which placed the group on the defensive and forced its Syrian patrons to leave the country. With control of the Lebanese government, a vast social-service network, an army of soldiers and operatives, and an arsenal of more than 40,000 rockets, Hezbollah has arguably never been more powerful.

The New Road to Serfdom: A Letter of Warning to America

Due to a commercial power outage, our recording of Mr. Hannan’s remarks has been truncated.

In World War II, American soldiers went overseas to rescue England from the Nazi menace. Now, with America threatened from within by the specter of social democracy, British politician Daniel Hannan returns the favor. A thoughtful and articulate spokesman for conservative ideas, he is well-versed in America’s traditions and founding documents and possesses the insight and experience to help America recapture its distinctive ideals and avoid turning into a socialist state. In The New Road to Serfdom, Hannan argues forcefully and passionately that Americans must not allow their nation to be taken down the road to European Union-style social democracy. He pleads with Americans not to abandon the founding principles that have made their country a beacon of liberty for the rest of the world.

Daniel Hannan is a writer and a politician. He contributes to several newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal and the London Daily Telegraph. A former president of the Oxford University Conservative Association, he was elected to the European Parliament in 1999, at the age of twenty-seven, and has been re-elected twice.

Older ones prefer Troubled Waters, a Tintin-style cartoon strip, whose heroine is a foxy MEP. Among the lines of dialogue are: “You can laugh! But this part of Canada also has its quixotic and romantic dimension. It was to here that the Tory loyalists fled the American Revolution. In the village of Deptford, Ontario, on the banks of the local river Thames, the great Canadian novelist Robertson Davies cast and situated a trilogy variously composed of the elements of magic and exile. One of his chief characters, Percy “Boy” Staunton, gives up much of his life and energy to the cause of the Prince of Wales, a once dashing and promising young blade who shatters and demoralizes his admirers by falling under the thrall of a designing woman and abdicating the throne without a fight.

“The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy. And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union, it is not an American concern.” — Henry Kissinger

Over the last few weeks, this modest little column of mine has been acquiring an almost eerie prescience and potency. I called for the death sentence on Tariq Aziz to be commuted, and it was only a matter of days before the president of Iraq announced that he would not sign Aziz’s death warrant. I called for Julian Assange to turn himself in, and he appeared at a London police station within hours of my words being published. Small stuff, you say. Show us something with a bit more heft and handle to it. All right, how’s this? In a November column, I denounced the shameful offer made by the Obama administration to the Netanyahu Cabinet in Israel and called for it to be withdrawn. And last week, in a wretched and furtive manner that befitted its original taint of bribery and corruption, withdrawn it was. How do you like that?

Until the most recent release of the Nixon/Kissinger tapes, what were the permitted justifications for saying in advance that the slaughter of Jews in gas chambers by a hostile foreign dictatorship would not be “an American concern”? Let’s agree that we do not know. It didn’t seem all that probable that the question would come up. Or, at least, not all that likely that the statement would turn out to have been made, and calmly received, in the Oval Office. I was present at Madison Square Garden in 1985 when Louis Farrakhan warned the Jews to remember that “when [God] puts you in the ovens, you’re there forever,” but condemnation was swift and universal, and, in any case, Farrakhan’s tenure in the demented fringe was already a given.

He was frequently left off the Obama plane when sensitive talks with Pakistani officials were in prospect. He was publicly rebuked by the administration when he stated that almost every Pashtun family contained at least one Taliban sympathizer. His early warning about the stupidity of incinerating the Afghan poppy crop was often ignored. If you are thinking of smoking a joint and escaping from the ongoing depressing news in the Middle East, you may want to think twice, for in smoking that joint or wedge of hashish you may be inadvertently funding Hezbollah.

The whole world now knows that Hezbollah is a religiously inspired group of Lebanese Shia Arabs, supported by Syria and Iran that is devoted to the destruction of Israel. They are not Palestinians fighting for a homeland. What the world does not know is that Hezbollah’s religious leaders, have also issued a “fatwa,” a theological ruling that sanctions worldwide support for the illegal production and distribution of narcotics to finance its war against Israel, America and their democratic allies in the West.

The Region: Who ‘likes’ Islamist groups?

By Barry Rubin – December 19, 2010

A recent Pew poll on public attitudes toward Islamism in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey shows that the radical Islamist side is winning.

There’s a lot of interesting material in the Pew Foundation’s latest poll of the Middle East, a survey that focuses on attitudes toward Islamism and revolutionary Islamist groups. The analysis that accompanies the poll, however, is not very good, so here is mine.

For example, in evaluating attitudes toward Hamas and Hizbullah, Pew says that they receive “mixed ratings from Muslim publics [while] opinions of al-Qaida and its leader, Osama bin Laden, are consistently negative.”

Really? Well, in Jordan, for example, 55 percent say they like Hizbullah (against 43% negative) while 60% are favorable (compared to 34% negative) toward Hamas. Yet this is even more impressive than the figures indicate. Jordan is a staunchly Sunni country whose government opposes the ambitions of Iran and Syria.

Daniel Greenfield om Palæstina

These decisions were not motivated by human rights, but by the growing shadow of Islam over Latin America, recognizing Abbas’ Palestinian Authority

For the Price of a Barrel of Oil

By Daniel Greenfield – December 15, 2010

Logo Canada Free Press SmallFollowing in the footsteps of Chavez and Castro, Argentina and Brazil’s regimes have declared that they recognize Abbas’ Palestinian Authority “as a free and independent state within the borders defined in 1967”. The Palestinian Authority is of course neither free nor independent. It’s a dictatorship that refuses to hold free elections. Or any kind of elections at all. It has neither freedom of speech nor freedom of religion. Or any kind of freedom at all.

Nor is it independent. The Palestinian Authority is funded by the United States and the EU. It has no economy. The only notable employers are the Palestinian Authority itself (subsidized wholly by foreign donors), the UNRWA (subsidized wholly by foreign donors) and Israel. If Brazil and Argentina had declared that the Bronx was now a free and independent state, it would have more credibility, because the Bronx has more of a local economy and a higher standard of human rights, than Arafat’s old Fatah gangsters do.

Dread and exhilaration in a city on the verge of political catastrophe

City Journal Autumn 2010The City grew rapidly, dwarfing in size and population any other in the country. The streets stimulated like cocaine; horns honked, crowds surged, nerves jangled. To step outside was to be electrified by the harlequinade of roaring colors, bright lights, rushing traffic. Sybaritic nightclubs thrummed until dawn and well thereafter; strange and perverse sights were to be found on every boulevard, in every alley, at every hour, the aesthetic of contradiction between civilization and barbarity heightened by the ersatz baroque of the old architecture and the shocking ugliness of the new. Transvestites prowled, thieves pickpocketed, and in the fashionable cafés, intellectuals smoked furiously and complained of their anomie.

Column One: Why Latin America turned

By Caroline B. Glick

Given the US policy trajectory, it is again obvious that the only one Israel can rely on to defend its interests is Israel.

Israelis can be excused for wondering why Brazil and Argentina unexpectedly announced they recognize an independent Palestinian state with its capital city in Israel’s capital city. Israelis can be forgiven for being taken by surprise by their move and by the prospect that Uruguay, and perhaps Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Ecuador and El Salvador, will be following in their footsteps because the Israeli media have failed to report on developing trends in Latin America.

And this is not surprising. The media fail to report on almost all the developing trends impacting the world. For instance, when the Turkish government sent Hamas supporters to challenge the IDF’s maritime blockade of the Hamas-controlled Gaza coastline, the media were surprised that Israel’s ally Turkey had suddenly become Hamas’s ally and Israel’s enemy.

The Guardian interviewer Christopher Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens: ‘You have to choose your future regrets’

Logo The GuardianIn June Christopher Hitchens, the hard-drinking polemicist and atheist, met his toughest opponent yet when he was diagnosed with cancer. The question on many lips was: would his illness alter his beliefs – on Iraq, on Islam, on God? At home in Washington, with a large glass of Johnnie Walker to hand, he responds with characteristic combativeness

By Andrew Anthony – The Observer – 14 November 2010

I wasn’t sure what, or perhaps whom, to expect as the door opened at Christopher Hitchens’s top-floor apartment in downtown Washington. The last time I had interviewed the renowned polemicist, author, literary critic and new resident in the medical state he’s called “Tumortown” was in 2005. On that occasion, after a 5am finish to our extravagantly lubricated conversation, it was I who had felt the pressing need of hospital attention.

There Is No Alternative: Why Margaret Thatcher Matters

Great Britain in the 1970s appeared to a nation be in terminal decline – ungovernable and rapidly headed for global economic irrelevance. Three decades later, it is one of the richest and most influential countries in Europe and Margaret Thatcher deserves all the credit. There Is No Alternative provides a valuable account of Margaret Thatcher’s visionary triumphs in the fight for free enterprise.

As journalist and conservative pundit Claire Berlinski shows, Thatcher’s transformation of Britain was no simple task. Her jarring economic reforms often came at a high human cost as inefficient subsidies, welfare programs, and industries were abandoned entirely. While Thatcher’s legacy has been the subject of passionate debate, Berlinski argues that we should be on her side. Socialism is on the rise and only countries willing to abide by Thatcher’s philosophy will prevail.

Claire Berlinski holds a doctorate in international relations from Balliol College at Oxford University. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Sun, National Review, and many others. She lives in Istanbul.

Uriasposten om Danmarks Radio:

Et klart mønster tegner sig. Konservative medier får etiketten ‘højreorienteret’, hvorimod venstreorienterede får ‘uafhængig’, ‘velanset’ eller ‘troværdig’.
