One of the foundation myths of post-religious societies is the idea that reason will win out-that faced with reason or anti-reason people will follow the former path. But as we gain access to vast arrays of information, the combination of new and old media appears to be making fools of us in unexpected ways — not least in failing to ask any of the questions that so obviously need asking.

Increasingly, our societal position seems to be naivety. But not straightforward naivety, rather a kind of naivety arrived at via extreme scepticism. Scepticism is a curious drug. A good dose of the stuff never hurt anyone. But inhale too much of it and you can be stoned into docility. Those who like to believe that they think for themselves appear to become sceptical of everything other than the things they should be sceptical of.

The Netherlands Cuts Funding from Anti-Israel NGOs

The Dutch Foreign Ministry says it will implement “sweeping reforms” to prevent the transfer of millions of taxpayer euros from going to Dutch humanitarian aid organizations that fund anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) activities and non-government organizations (NGOs) that deny Israel’s right to exist.

The move comes after Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal discovered that previous governments had allocated at least €10 million ($15 million) to Dutch and Palestinian groups promoting BDS activities against Israel.

Debate over the issue heated up on June 15, when the heads of major Dutch NGOs were asked to testify at a special hearing convened by the Dutch Parliament “to discuss the activity of NGOs in Israel and Palestine.”

There’s a glimmer of good news in the fight against Canada’s kangaroo courts, also known as human rights commissions.

Over the weekend, the Wildrose Party of Alberta, running a close second in provincial opinion polls, passed a resolution to scrap Alberta’s human rights commission and strengthen protections for freedom of speech.

This is great news for freedom — and bad news for government bureaucrats who will now have to find real work.

It’s a trend: The government of Saskatchewan recently passed a bill to scrap its human rights tribunal — not repealing the human rights law altogether, but at least getting it in front of real judges, instead of partisan activists who run the tribunal like a political star chamber. But just as important as getting rid of the pretend judges is getting rid of the counterfeit “right not to be offended.”

The Missouri River basin encompasses a vast region in the central and west-central portion of our country.  This river, our nation’s longest, collects the melt from Rocky Mountain snowpack and the runoff from our continents’ upper plains before joining the Mississippi river above St. Louis some 2,300 miles later.  It is a mighty river, and dangerous.

Some sixty years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) began the process of taming the Missouri by constructing a series of six dams.  The idea was simple: massive dams at the top moderating flow to the smaller dams below, generating electricity while providing desperately needed control of the river’s devastating floods.

Iraqi Kurdistan Passes Law Against FGM

The parliament of Iraqi Kurdistan registered an important victory against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on Wednesday, June 22, when it passed, by a large majority, legislation banning the practice. The brutal and un-Islamic custom of FGM has now been criminalized in the Iraqi Kurdish region, even as Western European countries have vacillated on its prohibition.

The success of Iraqi Kurdistan’s anti-FGM law has been partly credited to sustained investigative and lobbying work by a German/Iraqi non-governmental organization, WADI. The group has conducted surveys, beginning in 2007, revealing the wide incidence of infliction of FGM among Iraqi Kurds. WADI has disclosed that more than 60 percent of women and girls in Iraqi Kurdistan have been subjected to genital mutilation.

Five years is a long time, but for the Shalit family it has been an eternity.

Sunday was the first day of Sgt. Gilad Schalit’s sixth year in captivity. Schalit was kidnapped on June 26, 2006 and has been held hostage by Palestinian terrorists affiliated with Hamas in Gaza ever since.

For five years, Schalit has been held incognito. His terrorist captors have permitted him to send but one letter to his family and released but one video of Schalit over this entire period. He has been denied visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross. He was clearly emaciated in the video.

Nasser was the dictator whose armies invaded Israel in 1956, when Gaza was part of Egypt and the West Bank had been annexed by Jordan and nobody referred to Arabs as “Palestinians.” Darwish’s family lived in Gaza, and her father created the Fedayeen, the first terrorist organization dedicated to the murder of Jews and the destruction of the Jewish state. Her father was responsible for the murder of numerous Israeli civilians before he was killed by the Israeli Defense Forces in a targeted assassination. At the time, Nonie was 8 years old.

By the end of 2011, Obama would pull out 10,000 of the 100,000 U.S. troops currently in Afghanistan. In 2012, 23,000 more soldiers will be withdrawn, reducing the number to 67,000—the same number present before the troop “surge” deployed there in conjunction with the President’s December 2009 West Point speech, which outlined a new U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.

Details are still unclear, but it appears that as many as six jihad/martyrdom suicide bombers descended upon the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul Tuesday night. As many as ten people have been murdered, and the Taliban is thumping its chest in victory. The death toll could end up being much higher: a Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, exulted: “Our muj [mujahedin, warriors of jihad] entered the hotel, and they’ve gone through several stories of the building and they are breaking into each room and they are targeting the 300 Afghans and foreigners who are staying.”

On Wednesday, President Obama announced he would order a gradual troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. On a superficial level there is nothing surprising about this decision. Mr. Obama is simply implementing what he had promised the American people in 2009 when he agreed to honor Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s request for more troops. The surge was always going to be temporary, especially in view of budgetary pressures caused by the financial crisis.

A second glance at the president’s speech reveals something more interesting, however. In between the lines, what he said amounts to the elimination of a key component in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and the elevation of a minor practice.

We’re on the verge of another “flotilla” to Gaza.

Estimates of the number of ships and participants vary from day to day, tending downward, but the erstwhile organizers insist that the maritime operation will take place.

Their spokesmen have been hyperactive in drawing attention to the event. After all, without coverage, they’d be denied their oxygen. And the kind of coverage they seek – idealistic humanists and peace activists determined to aid the poor, beleaguered residents of Gaza versus stone-hearted oppressors in military uniforms determined to block them at all costs – would, needless to say, portray Israel in the worst possible light.

The International Solidarity Movement, Free Gaza Movement, U.S. Boat to Gaza, and kindred spirits want the world to believe there is a strip of land called Gaza that, left to its own devices, would create the Shangri-La of the Middle East.

Is a bunch of young Israeli lawyers working round the clock sustained only by Diet Coke, falafel and cigarettes about to pull off the legal equivalent of the Six-Day War?

Israel famously won that war before it even started by destroying the Egyptian air force on the ground. Now it’s beginning to look as if the Gaza flotilla of fools and fanatics may be holed below the waterline before it even sets off on its cynical and potentially murderous stunt.

Jeg har været ved at rode rundt på NRKs hjemmeside og har fundet nogle videoer, som jeg gav mig til at se her i forgangne weekend. Fra 15. november 2010:

Den tredje video er fra marts 2006. Den er fra NRKs “Bokprogrammet“. To forfattere diskuterer islam, koranen og deres egne bøger. Ayaan Hirsi Alis bog er “Sønnefabrikken”, der på norsk kom til at hedde “Krev din rett!”. Værten hedder Hans Olav Brenner:
