Russia Today actually shows the Muhammad cartoons! Quote from Lars Hedegaard who was acquitted of all charges: “We have constantly been told that this is an enrichment of the country. [They think] problems do not really exist. Problems only exist to the extent that people say there is a problem. So in other words, they want to silence critics because they think — or claim at least — that if they could shut up people like me, the problems would go away,” he says.

The latest European heresy trial ended yesterday with the acquittal of Lars Hedegaard. I wrote about the background to the case last week, and, while I’m glad that Scandinavia’s great warrior for free speech will not be rotting in a Danish prison, I’m inclined to agree with Tundra Tabloids that the verdict of the court in Fredericksburg is something less than a ringing victory for the principle of freedom of expression.

Time to Reform Denmark’s Anti-Hate Speech Law

Danish reporter Lars Hedegaard (pictured) was found not guilty yesterday of hate speech charges by the criminal court in  Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. Hedegaard was prosecuted earlier this year for comments he made in his home in December 2009 about “honor killings,” as practiced by Muslims.

“How do you deal with al Qaeda?” former British Prime Minister Tony Blair asked rhetorically during a public hearing in London earlier this month. Mr. Blair quickly answered his own question: “You can’t deal with them unless you deal with the bigger picture, which includes Iran.”

For many in the West, Mr. Blair‘s words must have seemed odd. After all, we’ve been told over and over again that Iran‘s mullahs and al Qaeda come from opposing versions of Islam that are so irreconcilable they cannot cooperate even in the face of common enemies. Mr. Blair knows better.

For the second time in less than a year, Mr. Blair told the British Parliament‘s inquiry into the Iraq war that al Qaeda and Iran are allies. He learned this the hard way. From 2003 to 2007, when Mr. Blair left office, the British military repeatedly produced intelligence reports pointing to al Qaeda and Iran as the authors of Iraq‘s most deadly terrorist attacks.

Tunisia has risen (or fallen); and now, Egypt, the historically stabilizing force in the Arab world is on fire, in chaos. Stealthily, almost invisibly, the Muslim Brotherhood is gathering its power in Suez, Alexandria, and Cairo. Wealthy Egyptians have already chartered private planes and flown to safety. President Mubarak has reportedly sent his wife and heir out to London many days ago.

Some wealthy Egyptians refuse to leave. They are personally guarding their gated Cairo homes from looters. I heard such a man’s voice on television last night. It was hoarse with anguish and anger, trembling with fatigue. “This land belongs to the Egyptian people not to Mubarak. This home belongs to me, I own it, I will not flee. I will guard it with my life.”
