He is the author of The Iranian Time Bomb, Machiavelli on Modern Leadership and Tocqueville on American Character, and he is a contributor to The Wall Street Journal. His latest book is Accomplice to Evil: Iran and the War Against the West.

FP: Michael A. Ledeen, welcome back to Frontpage Interview.

I would like to talk to you today about how Iran is killing our troops and why nobody is really doing anything about it.

Ledeen: They have been killing Americans for 30 years. That’s what the chants of “Death to America!” are all about. From the Hezbollah suicide attacks on the US Embassy and Marine barracks in Beirut in the early 1980s, to the use of Iranian-made roadside bombs and mines in Iraq and Afghanistan by terrorists trained in Iran, to armed assaults against American troops by members of the Quds force, Iran is at war with us.

In a riveting lecture, Francis Fukuyama, FSI’s new Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow resident in CDDRL, addressed “What is Development?” A prolific author, who has written widely on democracy, governance, and the international political economy, Fukuyama is a “fiercely independent policy intellectual,” said CDDRL Director Larry Diamond. Choosing to focus on the problem of development as an integrated whole, Fukuyama emphasized that “political development is a separate process unto itself– it is related to economic and social development, but it is not part of a seamless modernization process and has to be understood on its own terms.”

Sweden is stuck in a political stalemate: none of the country’s biggest parties achieved an overall parliamentary majority in recent general elections. The kingmaker may turn out to be the Sweden Democrats Party, which won 20 seats in the legislature after campaigning on a pledge to reduce immigration to the country by 90%. The surprise outcome suggests that Muslim immigration, long a taboo issue for Sweden’s politically correct mainstream parties, may end up receiving far more scrutiny in the future.

The September 19 vote left Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s incumbent four-party liberal-conservative Alliance coalition with 172 seats, three seats short of a majority in the 349-seat Riksdag. At the same time, the leftwing opposition – in which the Green Party and the Left Party joined the dominant Social Democrats – won just 154 seats. The Social Democrats took just 30.9% of the overall vote, their worst showing since 1914.

MARK COLVIN: In an extraordinary development at the United Nations, Israel’s Foreign Minister has given a speech that directly contradicted the views of his boss, the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In the current peace negotiations brokered by Barack Obama, Mr Netanyahu’s said that direct negotiations may resolve the hardest problems within a year.

In his speech at the UN, Mr Lieberman said the best case would be an intermediate agreement which would take decades. He argued that Iran’s alleged intention to attack Israel should be addressed first.
