President Barack Obama is the “ideal partner” for the global Islamist movement, which has more in common with the radical left than might be imagined, former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy tells Newsmax.

McCarthy, who prosecuted blind Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and other jihadists for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, also warns that America must guard against the rise of shariah — Muslim law — in parts of the country.

McCarthy, whose new book, “The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotaged America,” is being released Tuesday, is co-chairman of the Center for Law and Counterterrorism at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, D.C., and a contributing editor at National Review.

At some future date, when what Andrew C. McCarthy calls “the freedom culture” is again secure (we hope), the jihad-opposition will see itself divided into two camps in histories written about our current time: those who ineffectually supported efforts to stop “terrorism” and other supposedly generic outbreaks of violence in such lands as Iraq and Afghanistan; and those, far fewer in number (at least in that difficult decade following 9/11), who recognized terrorism as but one aspect of the civilizational assault emanating from expansionist Islam.

If the freedom culture wins, it will be because the latter group grew in influence. And if the latter group grows in influence, it will be due to such books as McCarthy’s excellent, ground-breaking new work, “The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America.”

Melanie Phillips is the author of “Londonistan” and now the author of a new book called “The World Upside Down: The Global Battle over God, Truth and Power.”

CBN News sat down with Phillips at the end of a long week here in Jerusalem, the week when Israel stopped the “Freedom Flotilla” from reaching Hamas controlled Gaza Strip.

The international incident provided a classic case in point for Phillips core thesis of her book. I think you’ll find her analysis of the week’s events insightful and refreshing in this first installment of our interview.

Nødhjælpsskibet Rachel Corrie nærmer sig her til morgen Gazas kyst. Skibet er ladet med kørestole, cement og andre varer, som aktivisterne vil overgive til indbyggerne i Gaza.

Aktivisterne ombord på Rachel Corrie, der er et irsk skib, har understreget, at de er fredelige aktivister, og at de ikke har nogen hensigter om at støde sammen med israelerne.

Ms. Phillips began her talk by emphasising the threat of Islamism, which inverts all logic by, for instance, portraying Israel’s attempts to defend itself as unprovoked acts of aggression. Yet Western intelligentsia has adopted the Islamist narrative on the Middle East. Ms. Phillips attributes this to the current tendency among the intelligentsia to be swayed by ideology, rather than rationality and empiricism, on issues such as global warming, the Iraq war, Israel, and scientism. Although these ideological stances are secular in nature, they resemble religious beliefs in many ways, for instance, their intolerance to dissent which is viewed as an obstacle to the “path to perfection.”
